There comes a point every August when Toronto collectively realizes summer is slipping away.
Suddenly, that patio reservation feels a little more urgent, leaving work early becomes easier to justify, and an Aperol Spritz under the evening sun seems considerably more important than whatever was left unanswered in your inbox.
If you’re looking to squeeze a little more la dolce vita out of the season, Cassius Cucina Contemporanea has just opened a new Italian Riviera-inspired patio at 624 King Street West.
And while the patio may be the newest reason to visit, Cassius itself is worth getting to know.
Opened in 2025 by Pat Lisi and Bruno Commodari, Cassius was conceived as a contemporary Italian restaurant and supper club, pairing an elevated dining experience with the after-dark energy King West is known for. The difference is that the transition is intended to happen organically. Dinner doesn’t abruptly end when nightlife begins. The lights lower, the music rises, another cocktail arrives and, before you know it, your dinner reservation has become your evening.
That philosophy now moves outdoors.
Tucked between the buildings of King West, the new patio creates a surprisingly secluded setting, with lush greenery, lounge seating and warm lighting surrounding an eye-catching marble bar. The release describes checkered flooring and an immersive sound system as part of the Riviera-inspired design, with the space intended to evolve from leisurely daytime dining into cocktails and late-night socializing.
“We wanted to capture the feeling of spending summer in Italy,” Lisi says, describing a place where one cocktail naturally becomes dinner, and dinner becomes the rest of the night.
Helping shape that experience is Director Adam Mahgoub, part of the team behind a hospitality concept that is as interested in atmosphere and how guests spend their evening as it is in what arrives on the plate.
Aperitivo, the Italian Way
The patio also introduces Dopolavoro, Cassius’ interpretation of the Italian aperitivo ritual.

Rather than treating happy hour simply as a period of discounted drinks, Dopolavoro is designed around slowing down after work with cocktails, food, music and conversation. The dedicated menu includes dishes such as gnocchi alla Nerano, made with ricotta gnocchi and zucchini blossoms, alongside an Italiano burger featuring a brisket-and-chuck patty and caramelized onions.
It’s an interesting extension of a kitchen that has already received local attention. Cassius’ contemporary Italian menu, led by Executive Chef Michael Frigo, moves through antipasti, handmade pastas, seafood and Italian-inspired cocktails. Previous Toronto coverage has singled out dishes ranging from tonno crudo and carbonara to its particularly decadent semifreddo Rocher.
The cocktails keep the Italian influence going, with Campari, amaretto, Italian gin and classics such as Negronis and Aperol Spritzes appearing alongside house creations.
Cassius isn’t pretending King West is Portofino, and perhaps that’s part of the fun.
This is still very much Toronto: stylish, social and a little dressed up. But for the final stretch of summer, a hidden patio, Italian food, a cold spritz and nowhere you particularly need to be afterwards sounds pretty close to la dolce vita to us.
Cassius Cucina Contemporanea is located at 624 King Street West, near King and Portland. Reservations are recommended, particularly for patio dining and weekend evenings.
