The actors of Cowboy Mouth

Heart in Hand Theatre is pleased to announce their upcoming production of Sam Shepard & Patti Smith’s Cowboy Mouth at The Cameron House.

Co-Artistic Directors Jessica Huras and Esther Jun of  Heart in Hand were inspired to produce this obscure one act play after reading Patti Smith’s best selling memoir, Just Kids. They also timed this production to coincide with Patti’s much anticipated solo exhibit at the AGO (February 9, 2013 – May 19, 2013).

Written by Sam Shepard and Patti Smith over the course of a wild and tumultuous night, the 1971 play tells the tale of Slim, a cat who looks like a coyote, who is kidnapped by Cavale, a chick who looks like a crow. She dreams of making him a “rock-and-roll Jesus with a cowboy mouth.”  In the first production, Cavale was played by Patti Smith, Shepard’s then-lover, while Shepard himself took the role of Slim. This 45 minute play takes place in the confines of a hotel room strewn with hubcaps, crucifixes & an electric guitar. The two lovers repeatedly berate and charm each other with tales of legendary thieves and imaginary visits from a Lobster Man.

Toronto’s renowned singer/songwriter Jason Collett (Arts & Crafts) & member of indie rock sensation Broken Social Scene is set to make his theatrical debut playing the title role of Slim. Jessica Huras (Trout Stanley, Being Erica), will tackle Smith’s Cavale and newcomer Mikey Lipka plays Lobster Man. Director Esther Jun (Hiding Words (for you) & Janet in Kim’s Convenience) is back at the helm, along with designer Akiva Romer-Segal, in Heart in Hand’s follow up production to their 2010 remount of Claudia Dey’s Trout Stanley.

The play previews January 25, 26 & 27th in the charming back room of The Cameron House (408 Queen Street West), with an additional exclusive preview on Monday January 28th at Toronto’s SoHo House (192 Adelaide Street West).
