What do you give someone who already has everything on their Christmas list?

How about an evening of flying reindeer, breakdancing elves and a little Cirque du Soleil magic?

This holiday season, Cirque du Soleil returns to Toronto with ‘Twas the Night Before…, a festive production that transforms one of Christmas’s most familiar poems into an imaginative world of acrobatics, music, dance and theatrical surprises.

Running December 10, 2026, through January 2, 2027, at Meridian Hall, the show returns following its Toronto debut in 2024, offering families an alternative to the traditional holiday theatre outing.

Inspired by Clement Clarke Moore’s classic poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, the production follows a young girl who has lost some of her enthusiasm for Christmas. When a snowstorm separates her from her father, she is swept into a whimsical adventure filled with unexpected characters, magical encounters and reminders of what makes the holidays special.

Of course, this is Cirque du Soleil, so the journey is anything but ordinary.

Rather than relying solely on traditional storytelling, the production brings Christmas to life through Cirque’s signature physical artistry. Expect reindeer leaping through hoops, energetic breakdancing elves, breathtaking aerial performances and an impressive roller-skating duo, all accompanied by a reimagined soundtrack of familiar holiday music.

The result is a production designed to appeal to both children discovering Cirque for the first time and adults who appreciate the remarkable athleticism behind its performances.

Unlike Cirque’s larger productions staged under the Big Top, ‘Twas the Night Before… takes place in a traditional theatre setting. That creates a more intimate atmosphere, with the action unfolding closer to the audience and the emphasis placed on storytelling, choreography and individual acrobatic acts rather than enormous sets.

The show’s previous Toronto engagement received positive attention for its visual creativity, colourful costumes and joyful holiday atmosphere. While some critics noted that the production doesn’t deliver quite the same scale of spectacle as Cirque’s larger shows, its accessible format and family-friendly approach remain central to its appeal.

And perhaps that’s exactly what makes it work as a Christmas outing.

At approximately 85 minutes without intermission, the production is short enough to keep younger audiences engaged while still offering plenty of moments designed to surprise and delight.

It’s also an opportunity to introduce children to live performance beyond traditional theatre, combining dance, circus arts, music and storytelling in a way that doesn’t require any previous knowledge of Cirque du Soleil.

For Toronto families planning their holiday activities, ‘Twas the Night Before… offers something that can be enjoyed across generations, whether it’s a family outing, a date night or a festive afternoon with grandparents and grandchildren.

After all, Christmas traditions don’t always have to involve shopping malls, crowded markets or another screening of a familiar holiday movie.

Sometimes the most memorable gift is simply sharing an experience together.

And when that experience involves flying acrobats, mischievous elves and a little theatrical Christmas magic, all the better.
