Toronto may be thousands of kilometres from Alberta, but for one day this month, Sankofa Square is getting a little more Western hospitality.

On Tuesday, May 26, Tourism Calgary is bringing its Colours of Calgary activation to downtown Toronto, transforming the busy corner of Yonge and Dundas into a free, all-day pop-up celebrating the city’s culture, energy, and signature friendliness.

Running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the event invites passersby to experience a small slice of Calgary without ever leaving the city — complete with coffee, games, giveaways, and one particularly iconic cowboy tradition.

At the centre of the activation is Calgary’s famous White Hatting ceremony, where visitors can pose for a photo-op while being ceremoniously “topped” with a white cowboy hat and welcomed as honorary Calgarians. The long-running tradition has become one of Calgary’s most recognizable symbols of hospitality and is expected to be one of the most Instagram-friendly moments of the day.

Guests can also grab complimentary coffee from Monogram Coffee, an award-winning Calgary roaster known for its specialty blends, while trying their luck at a spin-the-wheel game featuring branded merchandise and prizes.

More than just a tourism promotion, the activation leans into the growing interest in Canadian travel and domestic getaways. With many Canadians looking closer to home for summer adventures, Tourism Calgary is positioning the city as more than simply a gateway to Banff.

And honestly, they may have a point.

While Calgary’s proximity to the Rockies remains a huge draw, the city has increasingly built a reputation around its festival culture, food scene, music events, and nightlife. Summer alone brings major events including the Calgary Stampede, Taste of Calgary, and Chasing Summer, Western Canada’s largest EDM festival.

To sweeten the pitch, attendees can also enter for a chance to win a VIP trip for two to Calgary, courtesy of WestJet. The prize package — valued at $5,000 — includes flights, hotel accommodations, a spa experience, and local dining experiences.

For Toronto audiences, the event feels like the kind of pop-up designed for an easy mid-day detour: quick, free, interactive, and just different enough to break up the workday routine.

The Colours of Calgary activation takes place Tuesday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Sankofa Square (1 Dundas St. East). Admission is free and open to all ages.
