This summer, the Art Gallery of Ontario invites Toronto audiences to rediscover Impressionism not as a soft, familiar art movement, but as an act of creative rebellion.
Opening to the public on July 7, The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse from the Dallas Museum of Art brings 50 works to the AGO, tracing how a group of once-radical artists changed the way people saw, painted, and experienced the modern world.
The exhibition includes major works by Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, and Henri Matisse, offering a sweeping look at how Impressionism broke from academic tradition and opened the door to modern art.
For many visitors, the biggest draw will be Monet. The exhibition features seven works by the artist, including his famed Water Lilies, offering a rare chance to spend time with paintings that continue to feel luminous more than a century later. But the show also widens the frame, showing how Impressionism’s loose brushwork, attention to light, and focus on everyday life influenced generations of artists who followed.
Organized into five sections, the exhibition explores the movement’s origins, techniques, landscapes, and legacy. It also highlights the boldness of artists who rejected the official systems of their time and created new ways to exhibit and sell their work.
Beyond the galleries, the AGO will offer exhibition-inspired programming, including summer maker days, family watercolour workshops, and an Afternoon Tea experience at AGO Bistro beginning June 26.
AGO Members can see the exhibition starting June 24, Annual Passholders beginning July 1, and the public beginning July 7. The exhibition is free with general admission, and admission to the AGO remains free for Ontarians under 25, Indigenous Peoples, AGO Members, and Annual Passholders.
