It’s that time of year again when we come together to celebrate all that is French language cinema. The arrival of this all Franco film festival always signals the real coming of Spring to me. Yes, that’s right, Cinéfranco returns to Toronto this week to entertain, enlighten and perhaps even educate us.
Quite recently I caught up with one of the hardest working women in Toronto, Marcelle Lean, Director of Cinéfranco, who along with her team works tirelessly each year to make this festival a reality. When I asked her what she most looked forward to this year, she had this to say:
I am very excited about the fact that we have captivating filmmakers and actors presenting their films and interacting with our audiences. The films reflect their amazing talents as storytellers, film directors, actors having chosen topics that matter to society.
Cinéfranco has something for everyone. With award winning Francophone films from all over the world, covering so many different genres, one would be hard pressed not to find something that interests them.
Join theSceneinTO, Cinéfranco and the myriad of French speakers and non French speakers alike, who want to enjoy all that this festival presents and represents in our fair city.
This year the Cinéfranco festival which runs April 5th through April 14th, returns to The Royal Cinema on College Street. All films are in French with English subtitles. You can download the Festival program here.
If, like me, you find yourself yearning for the joie de vivre that is Paris in the Spring but can’t quite get there, why not lose yourself in films that can transport you to any number of French speaking lands? Single tickets start at $8 with the 9-day festival pass going for a mere $99.
For more information on the films being screened and which directors and or actors may be present, please visit the Cinéfranco website.
Want a free teaser to the festival? Head over to the Magic Lantern Theatres Carlton Cinema at 6.30pm this Thursday, April 4th for a special screening of Francophone short films from Canada. The directors are slated to be present to answer your questions and discuss their creative processes for creating the shorts.
Bon Cinéma!
