Canada’s Walk of Fame, along with Corus Entertainment, today announced the names of the 2016 inductees. Each has been selected for having excelled in their respective field, for fuelling Canadian pride and for inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps. The Broadcast Gala will also feature surprise performances and will be a televised special on Global on Sunday, December 18 at 8pm ET/PT.
The 2016 Canada’s Walk of Fame inductees are:
Jeanne Beker, Fashion Entrepreneur, Television Personality, Journalist
Corey Hart, Musician
Deepa Mehta, Filmmaker
Jason Priestley, Actor, Director
Darryl Sittler, Hockey Player, NHL
Al Waxman, Actor, Director (Cineplex Legends Inductee)
“Each year, we shine the spotlight on remarkable Canadians who have excelled in their careers and have contributed to the cultural fabric of this country, inspiring future generations to follow in their footsteps,” said Melanie Hurley, CEO of Canada’s Walk of Fame. “We are proud to honour this year’s inductees whose achievements will leave a lasting legacy for generations of Canadians.”
This year’s Allan Slaight Honour will be awarded to 26-year-old CCMA and JUNO Award-winning country music artist Brett Kissel. The Allan Slaight Honour recognizes young, inspirational Canadians who have achieved international success in the music industry. Kissel will be honoured alongside this year’s inductees during Canada’s Walk of Fame Celebration Events and will also be featured on the televised special.
John Cairns of Trenton, Ontario is the Recipient of this year’s Peter Soumalias Unsung Hero Honour. Chosen by the Canada’s Walk of Fame Board of Directors, and will be recognized for his positive outlook and for inspiring those around him to never give up.
On November 30, 1992, John’s life took a transformational shift – he left behind the life he’d known for 26 years, becoming a double amputee. On that day, John was run over by a 68-ton railcar in a work related accident and instantly suffered the loss of his right arm and right leg. Over an extensive period of rehabilitation, and the often-burning urge to give up, John began to realize that he had the power to change his outlook and turn impossibilities to possibilities, despair to hope, disabilities to abilities. He harnessed that acute desire, and focused on the power of the human spirit to become living proof of what is possible despite the circumstances. He leads by example and inspires everyone he encounters to do the same. This past August, John climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, living true to his motto of, “I can. I will.”
