Soulpepper Theatre Company is hosting a “Summer of Song” with a range of music programs including outdoor concerts and live performances in Toronto. The program includes three mainstage concerts that cover a variety of musical genres, a new outdoor summer music series, and a partner presentation featuring Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha as part of the 2023 Luminato Festival. The concerts will begin with a remount of The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience, which celebrates the iconic Canadian songwriter through story and song. The second concert is King Gilgamesh and the Man of the Wild, a hybrid music-theatre experience that draws inspiration from ancient tales and modern friendships. The final concert, Detroit: Music of the Motor City, is a world premiere that celebrates the unique sounds of Detroit through a range of artists from The Temptations to Eminem.
The theatre company is also introducing a new outdoor summer music series, Live From The Stage Door, which will be held in the Soulpepper courtyard during July and August. The series will feature a range of performers curated by Frank-Cox O’Connell, and admission will be $10 at the door. Alongside the concerts, Soulpepper’s Community Engagement team will present its third Queer Youth Cabaret on June 23 and 24, 2023. The cabaret showcases the talents of up-and-coming queer-identifying artists in Toronto.
Soulpepper’s artistic director, Weyni Mengesha, said, “This is a summer long party bringing fresh new takes on some of the world’s most enduring stories,” while Mike Ross, Slaight Music Director of Music, said, “Music has been threaded through the fabric of Soulpepper for so many years now, and this summer we’re taking it to the next level.” The theatre company is grateful for the support of its major sponsor and community access partner, Scotia Wealth Management, and the Slaight family for their contributions to the summer program.
Overall, Soulpepper’s “Summer of Song” promises to be a thrilling experience that will celebrate the magic of live music and shared experiences, and offer audiences an opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of musical genres in Toronto.
