Next to singing competitions like American Idol or The Voice, dance competitions like Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance delight and fascinate audiences. Why? Because we all really wish we could dance like that and are simply amazed at the ability of choreographed dancers. This year we had a lot of great productions in Toronto’s theatre community, but I missed the dance shows we’ve had over years. Toronto is always a hot spot for launching such productions (i.e.: Riverdance). Well, our anticipation is finally over as Mirvish brings us Heartbeat of Home.

Following its World Premiere engagement and a sold out run in Ireland and China, Heartbeat of Home will play Toronto first before starting on its American tour—told you we were a hot spot. The production has already received rave reviews and from the preview, it promises to be a fast paced, out of your seat style performance that will leave you out of breath just watching.

Created by the Producers and Director of the highly successful Riverdance, Heartbeat of Home is a brand new dance production incorporating components of traditional Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban music and dance. It features new and electrifying sounds written by award-winning, Golden-Globe-nominated, composer Brian Byrne and also the hit song “Lead Me Home” by American Idol Jessica Sanchez.

Another great point for Canada in terms of this production is that the world-class cast of 37, including a ten-piece band, has some home-grown talent.  Ryan McCaffrey began dancing at the age of three for the Irwin School of Irish Dancing in Calgary. He joined the cast of Riverdance on Broadway and later became the Principal Dancer and Dance Captain of Riverdance’s touring production. Born in Vancouver, Fred Nguyen has been dancing since he was nine and has been crowned eight times Western Canadian Champion, two times North American National Champion for Irish dance.  And from “just down the road” Goderich, Shaunessy Sinnett showcases her many talents of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, acrogymnastics and Irish dance for the North American debut.

Performances run January 21 to March 2 at the The Ed Mirvish Theatre, providing limited time to sign up for dance lessons in order to join the cast in the aisles. Tickets available via www.mirvish.com.
