The 12th annual Art Basel in Miami Beach was as robust, festive, and eclectic as it has ever been. It’s not just a festival for artists to sell their creations to wealthy collectors, it’s a time for the attendees to have a great time in the sun and fun of Miami Beach in December. The 2014 edition saw 73,000 international visitors take in the sights and sounds of the show.
Art enthusiasts from across the globe, including celebrities Leonardo DiCaprio, Miley Cyrus, and Eva Longoria, were able to take in block after block of cutting edge art works from mostly young, upcoming artists. The pieces and instillations were all in the central location of Miami Beach and a bit farther out in Miami’s art Mecca, Wynwood.
Most galleries and shows provided the three main ingredients that kept the party atmosphere flowing: great music, alcohol and food. The galleries of Wynwood and Miami Beach were surrounded by D.J.s, food trucks, and pop up bars. It made for a carnival atmosphere of young people dancing in the streets as they hopped from one gallery to the next.
As the events surrounding Art Basel gets more extravagant each year, many Basel purists complain that it’s becoming less about the art and more about the parties. At the end of the day, it’s about the bottom line. As long as the artists continue making more money each year, the events surrounding Art Basel will only grow.
