Don’t miss the Boy Wonder, ZEDD, as he plays the Sound Academy September 12.

September starts our transition into Fall and it’s a perfect time to try something new. From House to Rock, we’ve got you covered as iconic Toronto venues open their doors to some great artists.

German DJ, producer, songwriter and all-around wunderkind Zedd began producing electronic music  in 2009. Having produced  official remixes for Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, P. Diddy, and Swedish House Mafia, he is gearing up his blowout show at the Sound Academy on the September 12. His single “Clarity” ft. Foxes just went platinum, he is nominated for a VMA (for Artist to Watch) and has graced the stage of the Letterman show, introducing his infectiously singular electro to the masses. With support from Oliver and Alex Metric, this one is going to be a party.

Originally from Chicago, Houses is Dexter Tortoriello and Megan Messina. They formed in 2010 after a 3 month stint in Papaikou Hawaii living off the land where they created A Quiet Darkness which tells the story of a husband and wife separated in the midst of a nuclear disaster and their attempt to reunite with one another along the Highway 10 in California before their inevitable deaths, each song taking place in different abandoned houses along the way. The album’s celestial ambiance and wanderlust concepts are conveyed throughout the recording with techniques employed by Tortoriello’s production and the stark contrast between the minimal electronic pulses, found sounds and meandering and melancholy harmonies.  Houses takes over the The Garrison on the 17th.

Feeling more inclined to rock it out? Instrumental rock band Grails headlines a show at the Drake on the 18th. Initially going by the name “Laurel Canyon”, guitarist Alex Hall, drummer Emil Amos (also of ‘Holy Sons’) and second guitarist Paul Spitz garnered positive reactions following their first show, played on a whim. In 2003, just before the release of their first full-length album, the band changed its name to Grails. They adopted a louder, more aggressive style, often switching instruments with each member writing songs that saw them branching out to increasingly disparate styles.

Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii is most likely the most popular name in House music and EDM today. DJ Magazine ranked him 3rd in 2012 and given the popularity of his hit single “Wake Me Up” and his residency in Ibiza he’s sure to rise to number 1. Add his recent photo shoot for Ralph Lauren and you have yourself a pop icon. Luckily, you don’t need to travel to Ibiza to partake in the party that is Avicii. He’ll take over the Better Living Center at the CNE on August 20th to screaming fans and EDM enthusiasts alike.
