Toronto Island welcomes Bestival on June 12 and 13 featuring some of today’s hottest artists. The Scene was luckily enough to track down Toronto’s own Nathan Barato, DJ, Producer, and generally nice guy on lessons from the road and future possibilities.
TheSceneInTO: Thinking back to when you started, was there ever a moment when you thought of giving up? If so, what pushed you on?
Nathan Barato: Well you know there are times that are tough but I wouldn’t say I ever thought about stopping to DJ. I’ve stopped it as my career a couple times, but I’ll always DJ. Even if it’s not as my job, it’s my life’s passion and it’s the most fun thing I do with my time.
TheSceneInTO: You’ve toured a lot and given the chance, what’s the one thing you wished someone had told you while starting out? Any life lessons from the road?
Nathan Barato: Hmmm I can’t think of anything right now lol. Maybe that’s because I’ve been lucky to have a lot of friends doing the touring life before I hit it. I was able to pick up a ton of info from them. Life lessons from me lol…I’d say try to find a way to sleep on planes! I’m still trying to get that figured out but on the rare occasions when I do sleep on flights, it really helps me get through tough tours. On top of that, drink a lot of water from all the airport/airplane dehydration. Oh ya, take strolls around the plane, especially on long flights…your legs need circulation.
TheSceneInTO: Anything new you’re trying with your music? Any collaboration we’ll hear of shortly?
Nathan Barato: Actually yeah, I’ve kind of gone through a little personal renaissance in the studio and have been enjoying that. I really want to progress and take my sound deeper. I’m currently working on collabs with Francisco Allendes, Carlo Lio and Luca Cazal as well. It’s been a lot of fun.
TheSceneInTO: What’s the one festival you’ve always wanted to perform at?
Nathan Barato: Well, growing up in Toronto I’ve never been exposed to festival life, but I’ve been getting a taste of them here and there. They can be so much fun! If I have to pick one that I’d love to play, I’d say Glastonbury. I’ve never been but it looks like a grimy great time!
TheSceneInTO: What top artist(s), DJ, producer are on your radar?
Nathan Barato: There are always so many going through my views, but I’ve been milking Makam tracks a lot, lol…he’s got that groove…as well I just listened to the new Jamie XX album it’s really good!
