The young people of Brampton are a group of vibrant, diverse, doers. And Brampton is a city of young people, with a recent census rating the median age at 34.7, it’s become a haven for people looking to live within close proximity to Toronto while escaping the rising housing costs and hustle bustle of the big city.
Brampton is also a city that’s gaining a reputation for its distinguished citizens. The dapper Jagmeet Singh has been all over the news since he won the role of NDP Party Leader and in a nod to other notable sons and daughters, Brampton has created their own Walk of Fame to celebrate their homegrown talent.
This year’s list of inductees includes Rupi Kaur, Director X and Zarqa Nawaz as they join the ranks of past recipients of the honour, including Russell Peters and Michael Cera.
After a three-month international tour, world-renowned insta-poet Rupi Kaur returned home to commemorate and celebrate her induction to the Brampton Arts Walk of Fame with a special performance to a full (and clearly adoring) house at The Rose Theatre.
Some of the themes Kaur explores in her work include migration, revolution, community and history, so it was fitting to see her perform onstage at The Rose, in the city where it all began for her and which is so clearly dear to her heart.
Flowers in bloom indeed.
