Whether you’re looking for a place to take your family this summer, or you’re looking for a fun getaway with friends, consider visiting the Riviera Maya. Located on the Northeastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula, Riviera Maya offers a great Caribbean destination with a number of amusements for your enjoyment. With many great sights to see, you can enjoy so much, including the Mayan Caves at Aktun Chen to the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an. Here are just five of the amazing places to consider during your stay.
1. Tulum Archaeological Site
The remains of an ancient Mayan city, the Tulum Archaeological Site is filled with remnants of the way the Mayans lived centuries ago. The city overlooks the tranquil blue waters of the Caribbean and you can see the incredible architecture that was used by this ancient civilization. Tulum also includes unique carvings and even bits of red paint that the Mayans used.
The Tulum Archaeological Site also includes the Temple of the Diving God, named for the figure standing in the doorway that looks like it is about to dive from the structure.
2. Swim with the Sea Turtles in Akumal Bay
If you enjoy nature and love the idea of swimming with Sea Turtles, check out the opportunities in Akumal Bay. Akumal Bay is about a 30 minute drive from Playa del Carmen with public transportation as well as taxis that can get you there. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent and you can swim on your own or have one of the local guides show you the best places to swim with the turtles.
3. Mayan Caves of Aktun Chen
If you enjoy exploring caverns and caves, check out the Mayan Caves of Aktun Chen. The Aktun Chen Ecological Park is about 67 miles from Cancun and is in the heart of the Mayan rainforest. You can take a tour of the caves, escorted by a local guide that will tell you all about the history and details of how the caves were discovered. Anyone is welcome to visit the caves as long as they are able to walk on their own.
4. Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an
If you want to visit one of the most spectacular sites in the world, check out the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an. Covering 1.3 million acres, this reserve is just south of Tulum in the Riviera Maya. While the northernmost section is filled with mangrove channels and lagoons, the tours normally enter the Reserve from the Eastern side of the Tulum Beach Road. The Biosphere Reserve is divided into three different zones, each with their own unique character.
5. All Inclusive Beach Front Properties
One of the biggest reasons to visit the Riviera Maya is to relax on the ocean-front. Covering more than 60 miles of beachfront, there are several great properties to choose from. The Riviera Maya has some of the best all inclusives in the country. Select from elegant properties that offer everything you need from world-class dining to decadent suites, and hotels offering a wide variety of activities including dolphin interaction experiences, waterparks and nightclubs.
The chance to uncover ancient ruins, swim with graceful sea turtles and explore wondrous caves are just a few of the many reasons why you should visit the Riviera Maya.
