Toronto’s inaugural Bealtaine Irish Theatre Festival concludes with a delightful offering for young audiences: The Libravian, a charming and inventive production from Galway’s Brú Theatre. Scheduled for May 24–25 at the Helen Gardiner Phelan Playhouse, this 35-minute show is tailored for children aged 7 to 11 and their families.

At the heart of The Libravian is Lynn, portrayed by James Riordan, a quirky and endearing “libravian” who guides the audience through a captivating journey of literature. Dressed in a bright yellow cardigan, red skirt, and a poofy yellow wig, Lynn brings stories to life through expressive physical comedy and lip-syncing to immersive audiobook soundscapes. The performance features tales by Irish authors Patricia Forde, Meg Grehan, Christine Hamill, and Jane Mitchell, each exploring themes of bravery, identity, and self-discovery.

The production’s creative team includes director Cillian O’Donnachadha, producer Jill Murray, designer Orla Clogher, sound designer Jennifer O’Malley, lighting designer Michael Foley, and stage manager Catherine Denning. Their collaborative efforts result in a visually and aurally engaging experience that celebrates the joy of reading and the power of storytelling.

The Libravian has garnered praise for its ability to connect with young audiences, encouraging them to embrace their creativity and rediscover the magic of books. As part of the Bealtaine Festival, which showcases contemporary Irish arts and culture, this performance exemplifies the festival’s commitment to offering diverse and enriching experiences.
