After a sold-out run and major awards buzz earlier this year, Transcen|Dance Project’s Ophis is shedding its skin and returning to Toronto for a limited engagement at The Great Hall, running January 9–18, 2026. If you missed it the first time—or were among those left wanting more—this remount promises deeper immersion, new scenes, and an all-new finale that reframes everything you thought you knew about Medusa.

Named after the Greek word for serpent, Ophis is not a sit-back-and-watch experience. Upon arrival, audiences don masks and are invited to freely explore all four levels of The Great Hall, following performers through shadowy corridors, intimate rooms, and charged encounters. The result is a choose-your-own-adventure journey where movement, music, and myth collide.

Toronto audiences and critics alike were quick to embrace Ophis during its debut. The production went on to earn two Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations—for Outstanding Production and Outstanding Performance by an Individual—cementing its place as one of the city’s most daring immersive works of the year.

Under the direction of Julia Cratchley, Artistic Director of Transcen|Dance Project, the show reimagines Medusa not as a monster, but as a powerful symbol of resilience, sexuality, and agency. This retelling leans into emotional complexity, blurring the lines between victim, villain, and heroine. Cratchley notes that this remount offered a rare opportunity to expand Medusa’s world: new moments, new discoveries, and a finale that reframes the entire myth.

Set to a haunting original score by acclaimed Canadian composer Owen Belton, Ophis unfolds through a striking blend of contemporary dance and physical theatre. Each performer becomes both storyteller and guide, drawing audiences into a seductive, often unsettling landscape where vulnerability becomes strength.

For fans of immersive theatre, contemporary dance, or bold mythological retellings, Ophis remains one of Toronto’s most compelling winter experiences—an intimate, empowering journey that lingers long after the masks come off.
