I had the opportunity to try out the newly opened Noorden Food Bar and sample a variety of delicious modern Dutch food offerings flavored with Indonesian spices.
Noorden also offers Toronto’s largest selection of gin and the bartender Max, sure knows how to mix it to perfection. This new joint (formerly the Quince) is owned and operated by Mike van den Winkel and Jennifer Gittins, who also run the super popular Little Sister Indonesian Food Bar just down the street.
Noorden’s modern décor has a sleek industrial vibe and is a perfect spot for a light nosh and after work drinks. Van den Winkel is not only talented in the kitchen, he also custom built the zinc bar with a friend after watching some DIY videos on-line.
The tasting menu included melt-in-your mouth Pork Ribs with Sambal Coben sauce and Cucumber Salad; Patat Oorlog, also known as “War Fries” topped with mayo and peanut sauce; and my personal favorite, the Chicken Liver Toast with pickled onion and chimichurri.
I couldn’t get enough of The Angry Dutchman which is a blend of Bols Genever, St Germain Elderflower Liqueur, fresh lime juice, toasted coriander and chili water. I also recommend a regular Gin and Tonic as they make the tonic in house and you have 42 varieties of gin to select from.
Located in the Davisville neighborhood at 2110 Yonge Street, it’s just a quick dash from downtown.
