Just like the world of high fashion, there are trends in interior design concepts and themes, and 2013 is no exception. Here are a few of the most important and interesting upcoming ideas that are set to influence stylish home interiors this year.
Colour
The impact of colour on a home can never be underestimated, and the design experts are battling it out over which colours will be the top choices this year. In the blue corner, interior designer Kyle Schuneman is convinced that a hybrid colour – a mix of royal blue and navy – will catch on quickly. For example, this colour could be used when decorating serene spaces such as bathrooms and bedrooms to encourage a sense of calm.
In the yellow corner, Lidewij Edelkoort, the famous trend forecaster, is putting her money on the vibrancy of the many stimulating shades of yellow that she believes will be used in fabrics, fittings and general colour palettes for the home. Perhaps these are the hues for kitchens, playrooms and family areas?
Just to make choosing the ideal colours a little more difficult, Greg Natale has confirmed Pantone’s declared colour of the year as emerald green, which is backed by many home design and interiors magazines, while salmon pink and Dior gray are predicted to be the hot favourites on fashion runways and in fashion design showrooms.
Patterns
Another contentious area under discussion is the preferred patterns for 2013 – some designers favour geometric designs featuring stripes, zigzags and angled shapes, which are appearing on home wallpapers. Besides walls, these patterns can also be used on ceilings.
Alternative concepts include floral patterns of varying sizes and vintage prints on white backgrounds – great for textiles and for fabric-covered furniture. The key advice is to stop matching patterns and instead to clash the fabrics used for furniture, wall coverings, drapes and cushions. Embroidery, knitting and handcrafts will come into their own this year as designers are opting for large-scale knits and macramé for impressive décor and select furniture items.
Floors
Bleached floors are making a comeback, so say the experts. They are predicting a move to lighter colours for wooden floors and cabinets. In the same way, the wonderfully natural finishes of stone flooring, ceramic tiles and glass flooring are proving attractive. Specifically, large format floor tiles can make an interesting addition to the futuristic industrial look that is definitely part of the 2013 interior design landscape – click the link to find out about different types of wholesale tile and learn more.
Quirky ideas and a touch of whimsy
For a royal touch, gold flatware is heralded as the next big thing to impress guests at dinner parties. Cutlery and crockery will be getting the gilt treatment, and even wine glasses and tumblers may be adorned with golden coloured spots or stripes.
Interior designer Jana Bek recommends providing eye candy in the shape of fun table lamps or other cheeky artifacts, while Melanie Turner favours pictures created from gilded glass, featuring metal or gold leaf – there’s that royal touch again.
These are just a survey of the wonderful options out there for creating a stylish décor, just right for those who crave a trendy home for 2013.
