As Nuit Blanche Toronto returns on October 5-6, 2024, prepare for an evening of artistic exploration and sensory delight with “Dim Sum Without Distance”, a cross-cultural installation that brings together Toronto-based performance artist Lauren Runions and acclaimed Hong Kong artist HUNG Keung. This collaborative work, showcased at Love Park (96 Queens Quay West), is set to mesmerize audiences with its fusion of art, culture, and cuisine.
Inspired by the culinary art of dim sum, which means “to touch the heart” in Chinese, “Dim Sum Without Distance” will transform Love Park’s iconic heart-shaped pond into a striking visual narrative. The installation features five large-scale LED monitors placed around the pond, each telling a story that merges traditional Chinese landscape painting, digital media, dance, and performance art. This unique experience celebrates the transformative power of cultural exchange and serves as a reminder of how food can bridge both physical and cultural divides.
Bridging Cultural Distances Through Art
The installation was born out of a journey to Hong Kong, where Runions immersed herself in the world of dim sum, learning from culinary masters and absorbing the essence of the city’s vibrant culture. Through Hung Keung’s artistic lens, these experiences have been transformed into a series of compelling performance pieces, seamlessly blending Eastern and Western perspectives. The installation’s debut at Nuit Blanche ties in perfectly with this year’s theme, “Bridging Distance,” and is set to be a highlight of the city’s all-night celebration of contemporary art.
