DESCRIPTION:Black Atlass is playing The Great Hall on February 17\, part of his first big US tour. \nHe’s one of the faces of Alexander Wang’s new campaign and big in fashion world having already scored films for Louis Vuitton\, soundtracked Yves Saint Laurent ads and walked in Dior shows.  More importantly\, he’s insanely skilled (produces\, mixes\, engineers all of this stuff) and his voice kills.  His debut LP ‘Haunted Paradise’ (listen below) showcases his a beautiful blend of R&B\, 90’s rock and hint of dancehall. Also\, Creative Director Yimmy Yayo (Beyonce\, Jay-Z\, Bruno Mars\, The xx) did all of the art for it\, which is major for a more underground artist. \nALBUM: https://soundcloud.com/foolsgoldrecs/sets/black-atlass-haunted-parades/s-hh2oy

SUMMARY:BLUE VALENTINE
DESCRIPTION:Not everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day with long-stemmed roses and cinnamon hearts. In fact\, Common People’s Andrew Hartley and Emma Kerson will mark the occasion by journeying into the heart of loneliness. \nWith choreography by Simon Renaud and Renaud’s choreographic mentor\, Tedd Robinson\, the dancers explore isolation and connection\, togetherness and seclusion on February 15-18 at 8pm at The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance in Regent Park\, Toronto. \nIn Songs and Tarps\, Robinson explores partnership\, asking: how does coming together satisfy our need for connection? Where do we fall short? How do we see ourselves in each other? In l’inanité des bibelots / love would only slow me down\, Renaud transforms minutia into magic and shapes it into a glacial landscape of sound and light.

Through a series of compelling monologues and authentic narratives mixed with musical interludes\, SECRETS OF A BLACK BOY critically explores the underlying effects of common stereotypes faced by racialized men and delves into several controversial issues.

SUMMARY:Giraffage Performs at The Hoxton
DESCRIPTION:Giraffage is San Francisco-based producer and beat guru\, Charlie Yin. His signature sound of electronic pop has won him praise from musical tastemakers Pitchfork\, FADER and XLR8R. He burst onto the music scene with his debut Pretty Things EP. It was immediately followed by his dreamy synth-pop debut album\, Comfort\, which XLR8R called “[an] ebullient slice of electronic pop … [with] pleasantly ambient and sample-laden instrumentals.” In February 2013\, he released his lush Needs mixtape via Alpha Pup Records\, showing his versatility as a producer and “omnivorous music lover\,” as noted by Pitchfork. Giraffage’s staying power was fully cemented when he remixed one the sexiest albums of the decade\, The-Dream’s Love/Hate\, and turned it on its head. FADERbacked the project saying\, “Trying to remember a moment of anticipation right before hitting the play button as happy as the one I just experienced.” He most recently dropped his No Reason EP via Fool’s Gold\, the first release to ever feature Charlie’s original work. He has toured with Phantogram\, Flume\, XXYYXX and served as the main support on Porter Robinson’s massive “Worlds Tour.” He has performed at staple music festivals such as Outside Lands\, Treasure Island Music Festival\, HARD Day of The Dead\,Mysteryland\, Tomorrowworld Hard Summer\, CRSSD\, Splash House\, Lightning in a Bottle\, What The Festival\, Roskilde in Europe\, Mad Decent Block Parties in India along side Major Lazer. He recently released track “Bring Me Your Love” ft. THEA via Fool’s Gold. \n“Bring Me Your Love” ft. SUMMARY:Danny Brown Hits The Phoenix Concert Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Danny Brown is releasing his third studio album Atrocity Exhibition (Warp) on 9/30 and will be hitting Toronto on 11/4 at Phoenix Concert Theatre. His last two albums (XXX and OLD on Fool’s Gold) were critically lauded – there’s truly no one else like him in hip-hop. His new Evian Christ-produced track “Pneumonia” got Best New Track @ Pitchfork\, an A from Entertainment Weekly\, 8/10 from FACT etc – check link to listen below + see his video for “When It Rain” with an apocalyptic Detroit as the background. Album has some great cameos – including Kendrick Lamar !! \nListen to Pneumonia via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csxSwkl4Gd0\nWatch When it Rains via http://smarturl.it/rain-yt \nAtrocity Exhibition explores some weighty themes\, but there’s light amidst the darkness\, too. Brown’s sense of humor and party-starting vibe is more than present throughout the record\, from the frantic electro-combustion of “When It Rain” to the raunchy travelogue of “Golddust\,” the latter in which our protagonist rhapsodizes about twerk-offs and Bloody Marys for brunch over a martial soul sample. Soothed-out smoking anthem “Get Hi” finds Brown taking a literal breather to remind listeners about the finer\, more fragrant things in life\, while “White Lines” turns a dizzying drug binge into the type of sing-along you’d find on a demented\, alternate-universe Sesame Street. \nClearly\, Brown has poured a lot of himself into Atrocity Exhibition—an undistilled sip from his creative tap—and as such\, the album’s features have been carefully chosen. Kelela lends her snaking vocals to the intriguingly murky “From the Ground\,” Cypress Hill’s B-Real delivers “Get Hi”’s languid hook\, and Earl Sweatshirt\, Kendrick Lamar\, and Ab-Soul all convene for the twinkling ominousness of “Really Doe.” \n“When XXX came out\, all of us were peers\, and those were the three rappers who were the best\,” Brown explains on having the star-packed trio appear on the track. “I felt like we were competitors\, they made me want to step my game up. I wanted to put the hottest rappers in the game on there.”

SUMMARY:Ry X First Canadian Performance at Great Hall
DESCRIPTION:It’s his first North American tour\, so we’re in for a treat. The music is overwhelmingly moving\, especially in the settings he curates for the live show. The landscapes are fluid and his voice is unparalleled. Something like if Sufjan Stevens and James Blake did a project.  \nRy X was born into the wild. Marooned in Angourie\, a tiny island community off Australia’s east coast.  “It’s been a real journey…” says Ry\, whose path to his current home in Los Angeles’ downtown warehouse district has taken him to Costa Rica\, Indonesia\, Stockholm\, London and Berlin. \nHe reckons he’d be “a super renegade gypsy surfing the world” if it weren’t for music\, and he applied that mindset to his art. Ry has been striving to find that same purity ever since he left home as a grunge-obsessed kid with a surfboard aged 17. ‘Dawn’\, his debut album as Ry X\, is a sign that search is over. \nRecorded live with only Ry and his guitar\, every song on ‘Dawn’ has a threadbare power – the arrangements are stripped back so there’s nothing separating the listener from the songs’ content. “These are live takes\, sitting there like Neil Young or Nick Drake used to. It’s about holding tension. You’re really get the feeling of someone sitting in a room playing the song.” \n“Only”\, for example\, is beautiful and devotional – think ‘Pink Moon’-level delicate with the weightiness of a Bon Iver or The xx deep cut.  A seamless extension of its predecessor (Berlin)\, it once again showcases RY’s boundless ability to create thought-provoking atmospheric pop music\, engulfed with his distinctively ethereal vocal lines. \nSpeaking of Berlin\, Ry also has deep ties to the electronic/house music scene there through another project he’s involved with called Howling\, a collab with Frank Wiedemann (of German electronic duo Ame).  He also contributes to another electronic project called The Acid\, with DJ Adam Freeland (UK) and fellow Californian producer Steve Nalepa. \nOnly (Kaskade remix):  http://found.ee/RYX_KaskadeOnlyRMX\n\nDeliverance (Fort Romeau remix):  http://found.ee/RYX_DelivFort-RomeauRMX\n\nDeliverance (Eagles & Butterflies remix):  http://found.ee/RYX_KaltblutPremiere

SUMMARY:Classixx Take Over Velvet Underground
DESCRIPTION:Classixx is going on tour for their latest album Faraway Reach. \nLike a balmy breeze from a world of endless summer\, Classixx are back with Faraway Reach\, a buoyant follow-up to their 2013 debut – something to cruise to with the top down\, from festival fields to the beach\, from the dance floor to the shotgun seat. Faraway Reach casts Classixx’s young-but-nostalgic melodies and sublime chords in a more mature\, restrained light\, albeit no less lively and bright. Establishing themselves as producers of note on their debut LP (Pitchfork called them “great songwriters\, too”)\, Faraway Reach delivers powerfully smooth and soulful jewels that are still decidedly their own – the Classixx signature is one that can’t be traced. Their love of plaintive voices and disco-inspired grooves is as evident as ever\, but this time around everything is a bit bolder\, the cast is bigger\, the melodies distilled into a higher potency – it’s all just as good\, but better. The album traverses locales\, vocalists and inspirations. It’s a fitting movement for the duo\, from Venice beach to the mountains of South Africa and everywhere in between – a Faraway Reach. \nHere’s the album:\nhttps://soundcloud.com/innovativeleisure/sets/classixx-faraway-reach/s-G4c81 \nThey also made a video with T-Pain where they recreated The Smiths’ “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This Before” shot-for-shot:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRbWBONZKTI

SUMMARY:Andrew Collins Trio Release At Hugh's Room
DESCRIPTION: Andrew Collins is a part of the firmament. He’s the mercurial\, 5x JUNO-nominated/6x CFMA winning mando-maestro behind two of Canada’s top-billed string bands – The Foggy Hogtown Boys and the Creaking Tree String Quartet. He’s an adventurous musical explorer melding new worlds together in his voracious quest for musical fulfillment\, la nding somewhere between the re-imagined worlds of Béla Fleck and Newgrass invader\, David Grisman.\n\n\n\n\n\nTogether with fellow members of the Andrew Collins Trio (ACT) – string guru Mike Mezzatesta and in-the-pocket bassist James McEleney – good times are sure to be had when they serve up their sophomore release And It Was Good. at music hotspot Hugh’s Room. And It Was Good boldly showcases ACT’s popular collision of genres – merging classical with bluegrass\, folk with jazz\, swing with Celtic – it also kicks off the first time the spirited Trio has crafted a thematic concept album. \nThe Trio’s instrumentation (mandolin\, mandocello\, fiddle\, guitar\, bass\, mandola) is augmented by a string quartet to add necessary shading and colour to each track\, all carefully composed by Collins. Opening with “Light from the Darkness”\, the use of mandolins\, bass and strings transforms the concept of nothingness into the semblance of light appearing through two distinct movements that build in intensity as the world awakens. “Firmaments” serves to define the separation of the heavens\, with each member of the Trio deftly playing a pair of instruments apiece to keep this ball rolling\, atop a repeated melodic theme. Contrast this with “Fish &a mp; Fowl” – an all-string assault in two parts\, alternating dark to light and juxtaposing minor and major scales to represent the difference between the murky depths of the sea and the freedom of flight.  The final song – the title track – breaks into what can only be called a gleeful\, up-tempo celebration of life itself. The mandolin-driven piece draws heavily upon bluegrass with its bursts of fiddle\, backdrop of acoustic guitar while the bass holds down the bottom. Everyone is clearly having a Good time in “And It Was Good”\, now that the hard work is done! \nTickets are $22.50 in advance and $25.00 at the door

SUMMARY:DIE ANTWOORD Plays Sound Academy
DESCRIPTION:DIE ANTWOORD ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM MOUNT NINJI AND DA NICE TIME KID \nALBUM TO BE RELEASED SEPTEMBER 16th FEAT. THE BLACK GOAT AND GOD \nFIRST SINGLE “BANANA BRAIN” AVAILABLE AS INSTANT GRAT WITH PRE-ORDER OF THE NEW ALBUM \nListen here: http://smarturl.it/da_bananabrain \nWatch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXlZfc1TrD0 \n“When Ninji\, ¥o-landi and God hooked up with The Black Goat and started recording DieAntwoord’s 4th album around 2 years ago the mood of the tracks we started banging out was rough and tough and mischeivious and wild and hard and dark and at that point we were going to call this album RATS RULE\, because in life you get the champions and the underdogs and in our minds we sometimes feel like 1 level below the underdogs in this fucked up pop world\, but we also know our time is coming\, and soon we gonna take over this whole bitch. So anyway\, then we made some more tracks and the core of the album stayed all dark and ratty but a new layer oozed out around our dark core that was kinda mental and lunatic and random and juicy and 2 much fun and so we changed the name of our album to WE HAVE CANDY. Then recently while we was finishing up this album another layer exploded out of our dark wild juicy core like a giant supernatural mega aura and suddenly our album was so epic and sometimes vulnerable and sometimes sweet and romantic and so brave and full of mystery and win. Like when you going through hell\, and the mission feels impossible\, but you not allowed to fail\, and all you can do is keep your chin up and keep going\, then when you least expect it you emerge from this dark never-ending hole\, and… you made it! And you can’t believe it\, and you’ve changed inside and you’re better and stronger and calmer and more fun than you were before you journeyed merrily in2 hell. And as we stepped out into the light\, a little bruised and battered\, but still ok\, we blinked and tried to focus then looked at each other and laughed out loud. Then ¥o-landi said\, “Why don’t we call the album MOUNT NINJI & DA NICE TIME KID?” And Ninji’s shoulders relaxed and he slumped back into his chair and said\, “You a fuckin genius! I love you!” – NINJA & YO-LANDI \nPRE-ORDER: MOUNT NINJI AND DA NICE TIME KID:\nhttps://dieantwoord.lnk.to/mountninji \nFollow DIE ANTWOORD on social: \nTwitter\nFacebook\nInstagram\nSoundCloud

SUMMARY:Machinedrum plays Velvet Underground
DESCRIPTION:North Carolina-born artist Travis Stewart\, known as Machinedrum\, occupies a perhaps unique place in US electronic music. A pioneer and a popularize\, a restless and relentless seeker\, Stewart brings together coasts and continents in projects which are both conceptual and heartfelt\, clever and banging. He has produced and composed over a dozen albums under various aliases since his first independent release in 1999. Covering an astonishing variety of styles with ease\, through solo Machinedrum work and with collaborative projects Sepalcure\, JETS\, Dream Continuum\, or other mutations\, Stewart has established himself as electronic music’s true Renaissance man. His debut as Machinedrum\, Now You Know\, was released in 2001 on pioneering Miami-based Merck Records and gained worldwide attention and praise from musicians\, fans and critics. Having a strong background in both acoustic and electronic instrumentation\, he was quickly able to navigate those various elements on his early releases\, from field recording and vintage synth-laden Urban Biology to his seminal production and mixing of This Charming Mixtape with MC Theophilus London and his critically acclaimed 2009 album Want To 1 2?\n2010’s Many Faces EP ushered the next phase of Machinedrum’s career and a fruitful relationship with Glasgow-based label LuckyMe. Sepalcure\, a duo launched with Praveen Sharma (aka Braille) shortly after\, became one of the most intriguing names in the bass music scene and a series of releases on bubbling imprint Hotflush has given the duo US-ambassadorship of this UK-based genre. Relocating to Berlin for a few years\, Machinedrum maintained a steady flow of releases including the Alarmaa and SXLND EPs with LuckyMe and the critically-acclaimed Room(s) LP on Planet Mu Records\, a fresh new exploration of juke\, jungle\, and drum&bass that garnered high praise across the music world. The dance floor blitzkrieg JETS\, his latest project with longtime collaborator Jimmy Edgar\, has kept him ahead of the curve\, serving as yet another showcase for his musical evolution. \n Perhaps his boldest release came in the form of the full-length LP Vapor City on Ninja Tune\, a conceptual universe which included an interactive website\, digital citizenship program for fans\, and an art exhibit in NYC that launched with the album. With subsequent EPs\, exclusive remixes from a series of heavyweights including dBridge and Om Unit\, and a critically-acclaimed world tour\, Vapor City carried on his rich exploration of multimedia arts and music. Since that record’s release\, he has collaborated with Jimmy Edgar (as JETS) on The Chants EP; released Movin’ Forward\, a tribute EP in memory of (and using unfinished collaborations with) footwork legend DJ Rashad; revisited his long-running collaboration with Braille as Sepalcure on the LP Folding Time\, as well as delivered a bunch of superb remixes for acts including Rudimental and Daktyl. \n\nStewart puts his unique signature on everything he touches\, carving out a career as a world-class producer on top of releasing solo material and remixes. In addition to the likes of Azealia Banks\, Jamie Liddell and Jesse Boykins III\, in the past few years Machinedrum has produced for English singer-songwriter Obenewa\, and many heavy-hitting tracks with the hotly-tipped Dawn Richard (AKA D∆WN). Since the release of Vapor City\, Stewart has once again relocated\, moving from New York to Echo Park in Los Angeles. His new record\,Human Energy\, “reflects a period of great change in my life. I moved across the country to a new city\, I proposed to the girl of my dreams\, I moved into a new house\, bought a brand new computer and set off to write a new album.” Lighter\, brighter\, full of energy and warmth\, with a stellar cast of guests\, Human Energyis set to take Machinedrum from an aficionado’s best-kept secret to his rightful place amongst the biggest stars of American dance music
