SUMMARY:Bad Jews
DESCRIPTION:The Koffler Centre of the Arts today announced public programs and final casting for the Toronto premiere of Joshua Harmon’s Bad Jews. Julia Vally joins the cast in the role of Melody for this “exhilaratingly abrasive” play exploring family\, faith\, and legacy as seen through the eyes of its Millennial protagonists (Daily Telegraph). Tickets for Bad Jews are available online at kofflerarts.org or by phone at 647-925-0643. \n  \nBursting with crisp\, fast-paced dialogue\, Bad Jews is “delicious\, nasty fun” (New York Post) that is as thought-provoking and poignant as it is viciously funny. After the death of their beloved grandfather\, three twentysomething cousins gather in a cramped Manhattan apartment and fight over a precious family heirloom\, learning there is much more at stake than who gets what. \n  \nIn one corner is Daphna Feygenbam (Rebecca Applebaum)\, a “real Jew” who is volatile\, self-assured\, and unbending. In the other is her equally stubborn cousin Liam (Kristopher Turner)\, a secular and entitled young man who has his “shiksa” girlfriend\, Melody (Julia Vally)\, in tow. Stuck in the middle is Liam’s brother\, Jonah (Daniel Krantz)\, who tries to stay out of the fray. When Liam stakes claim to a pendant their grandfather carried through the Holocaust\, a fierce and hilarious brawl ensues. \n  \n“If you’re a young Jewish person who’s engaged at all with your religion\, you’ve met people from all sides of the spectrum. You’ve met people who are incredibly invested in it\, and people who are incredibly dismissive of it\, and everything in between. Those are things I’ve been around\,” said Joshua Harmon in a New York Times interview about Bad Jews. \n  \nPremiered in New York in 2012\, Bad Jews has become one of the most produced plays in the United States and is one of the most frequently produced plays in the world\, earning critical acclaim from London to Sydney. \n  \n“The richness of the play is in the flamboyant vitriol of the language and the dysfunctional gusto of the characters.” — LA Times \n  \n“[In] Joshua Harmon’s strikingly perceptive comedy with claws\, Daphna is one of the most memorable characters to come down the pike in some time.” — Backstage \n  \n“Equal parts brains and brawl\, Joshua Harmon’s play isn’t a textbook comedy of hostility\, but a smart\, divisive conversation starter.” —New York Post \n  \n“Superlative…scaldingly funny” — Daily Telegraph \n  \n“Delectably savage humor” — The New York Times \n  \nPUBLIC PROGRAMS \n  \nPost-Show Talkbacks \nFollowing each of the ten performances\, the Koffler presents audience talkbacks hosted by Koffler Salon host Nick Hutcheson\, and writer and cultural historian Eric Beck Rubin\, together with members of the Bad Jews cast and creative team. These post-performance conversations will explore audience reaction to questions raised in the play\, including how the characters relate to their own personal heritage and history. \n  \nLife in Orchestra \nDirector Michèle Lonsdale-Smith leads the cast of Bad Jews alongside other actors in Life in Orchestra\, a live one-hour theatrical installation that will be open to the public in the Koffler Gallery. Inspired by the legendary Lee Strasberg’s Relaxation technique\, this drama process uses all five senses to prepare the actors and encourage them to approach their work with complete vulnerability and authenticity. For the audience\, this behind-the-scenes experience is often visceral and profoundly moving. Life in Orchestra will be presented on Saturday\, May 27th\, 5 PM; Thursday\, June 1\, 6 PM; Friday\, June 2\, 6 PM; and Saturday\, June 3\, 5 PM. \n  \nBAD JEWS PERFORMANCE DETAILS\nThursday\, May 25\, 2017: 8 PM Preview \nFriday\, May 26\, 2017: 8 PM Opening Night \nSaturday\, May 27\, 2017: 2 PM matinee & 8 PM evening \nSunday\, May 28\, 2017: 2 PM \nThursday\, June 1\, 2017: 8 PM \nFriday\, June 2\, 2017: 8 PM \nSaturday\, June 3\, 2017: 2 PM & 8 PM \nSunday\, June 4\, 2017: 2 PM \n  \nTicket prices: $30 adult | $25 youth/senior/arts worker

SUMMARY:Dom Juan
DESCRIPTION:Théâtre français de Toronto presents Dom Juan; the original version of the Molière classic directed by Joël Beddows and presented at the Berkeley Street Theatre with English surtitles Wednesdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. The May 25 performance is part of the Fundraising Gala which will conclude with a reception at the Thompson Landry Gallery. \nSYNOPSIS: Rebellious rake. Inveterate skirt-chaser. Dom Juan doesn’t want to be a son. He doesn’t want to be a spouse. He doesn’t want to be a master. He doesn’t want to be a hypocrite. Dom Juan wants to be free to seduce women non-stop — and especially — without limits\, without worrying about the consequences. But can one really run through conquest after conquest without ever having to pay the heavy price of judgement? \nIrreverent and diabolical\, the show is carried by the talented Pierre Simpson in the title role\, Marcelo Arroyo\, Lina Blais\, Sophie Goulet\, Christian Laurin\, and Nicolas Van Burek. Sets are designed by Melanie McNeill; lighting\, Michael Brunet; costumes\, Nina Okens; and soundscape\, Venessa Lachance. \nA classical work\, the play — very controversial at its time — is as contemporary as ever in its exploration of impossible utopias: absolute pleasure and instant gratification devoid of moral obligation. Perhaps embodying universal desires himself — repressed\, perverse desires —  Dom Juan remains a complex and ambiguous character who manipulates his world without remorse\, particularly regarding his manservant\, Sganarelle\, with whom the relationship of dominance but also admiration reflects our own unhealthy attraction towards absolutists.  Rearranging the rules of this carnival game\, award-winning director Joël Beddows\, in his directorial debut as TfT’s artistic director\, plunges us into a world at the crossroads of zany comedy\, debauchery\, and the search for a more human than mythical figure — offering an examination of our society through the ages — asking the question: Who is the culprit? The tyrant or his admirer?

SUMMARY:Alina Baraz plays Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Alina Baraz is coming to play at Velvet Underground and is opening for Coldplay this fall. \nAlina Baraz\, a Los-Angeles based singer and songwriter\, is the “next leading star of the emerging class of leftwing pop singers.” Alina invites listeners on an explorative journey that challenges their perspective and frees the mind of all boundaries. \nA native of Cleveland\, Ohio\, and the first child in her family born in America\, Alina was introduced to music at a young age by her classically-trained parents. SUMMARY:Black Atlass plays Great Hall
DESCRIPTION:Black Atlass is playing The Great Hall on February 17\, part of his first big US tour. \nHe’s one of the faces of Alexander Wang’s new campaign and big in fashion world having already scored films for Louis Vuitton\, soundtracked Yves Saint Laurent ads and walked in Dior shows.  More importantly\, he’s insanely skilled (produces\, mixes\, engineers all of this stuff) and his voice kills.  His debut LP ‘Haunted Paradise’ (listen below) showcases his a beautiful blend of R&B\, 90’s rock and hint of dancehall. Also\, Creative Director Yimmy Yayo (Beyonce\, Jay-Z\, Bruno Mars\, The xx) did all of the art for it\, which is major for a more underground artist. \nALBUM: https://soundcloud.com/foolsgoldrecs/sets/black-atlass-haunted-parades/s-hh2oy

SUMMARY:BLUE VALENTINE
DESCRIPTION:Not everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day with long-stemmed roses and cinnamon hearts. In fact\, Common People’s Andrew Hartley and Emma Kerson will mark the occasion by journeying into the heart of loneliness. \nWith choreography by Simon Renaud and Renaud’s choreographic mentor\, Tedd Robinson\, the dancers explore isolation and connection\, togetherness and seclusion on February 15-18 at 8pm at The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance in Regent Park\, Toronto. \nIn Songs and Tarps\, Robinson explores partnership\, asking: how does coming together satisfy our need for connection? Where do we fall short? How do we see ourselves in each other? In l’inanité des bibelots / love would only slow me down\, Renaud transforms minutia into magic and shapes it into a glacial landscape of sound and light.
