SUMMARY:TAPESTRY OPERA presents M’DEA UNDONE
DESCRIPTION:Experience the unraveling of mythology’s most controversial heroine in a modern wartime context\, set against the stunning industrial backdrop of Toronto’s reclaimed brick factory\, Evergreen Brickworks. TAPESTRY OPERA presents a recreation of the classic myth in the world premiere of M’DEA UNDONE. Written by Dora Award-winning playwright Marjorie Chan and brought to life by the lush orchestral and electronic soundscape of Scottish composer John Harris\, M’DEA UNDONE will receive its world premiere in Toronto for a limited engagement.\n \nM’dea’s struggle for survival and revenge begins when she accompanies her lover Jason to a new life in the west. Having betrayed her village to help the military commander\, M’dea rages when he distances himself from his family to advance his political aspirations and take a new wife. Thus begins M’dea’s retribution and rapid spiral towards the opera’s searing and tragic finale. \n \nThe site of this production makes it unique. Both Tapestry Opera and Evergreen Brickworks fuse tradition and innovation. Evergreen Brickworks is a repurposed brick factory transformed into a modern community environmental centre; Tapestry Opera advances an artistic tradition to create wholly original\, contemporary works. In accordance with the Brickworks’ mandate\, M’DEA UNDONE will be produced sustainably\, using a minimal set made from reusable materials that showcases the Brickworks’ natural-industrial setting. Audiences will experience M’DEA UNDONE in an awe-inspiring\, untraditional space\, and will have the opportunity to engage with their natural surroundings before the curtain rises.   \n\nAll Tickets are between $50 and $95 and can be purchased online at\nhttps://tapestryopera.com/mdea-undone/ or by calling 416.537.6066 X243

SUMMARY:The COAL MINE presents CREDITORS
DESCRIPTION:A modern melodrama of obsession\, honour and revenge\, CREDITORS is Strindberg’s least produced play\, but considered one of his most mature.  With a new adaptation by Scottish playwright David Greig\, CREDITORS was originally produced by Donmar Warehouse in London\, 2008.  The show\, under the direction of Alan Rickman\, transferred to New York in 2010 where Ben Brantley called it a “thrilling new interpretation.”\n\nCREDITORS is a blackly comic depiction of gender warfare; a savage tragicomedy that is both painful and fascinating. Slyly manipulative Gustav\, one of the play’s tortured threesome and Adolph’s tormentor\, is a portrait of raw\, undiluted destructiveness. Systematically poisoning Adolph’s marriage by suggestion\, Gustav is out for revenge.  The power games continue to shift with the arrival of Adolph’s wife Tekla\, his object of desire and disdain.\n\nDora Award and Betty Mitchell Award-nominated director Rae Ellen Bodie is a highly sought-after voice/acting/performance coach\, theatre director and actor.  CREDITORS features Hardee T. Lineham (Harper Regan\, The Ugly One\, Stuff Happens) as Gustav; Noah Reid (Dead Metaphor\, Parfumerie\, Three Sisters) as Adolph; and Liisa Repo-Martell (SEEDS\, King Lear\, Uncle Vanya) asTekla.\n\nThe COAL MINE is an independent theatre space curated by Ted Dykstra and Diana Bentley. The premiere production\, The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis\, directed by Layne Coleman\, ran November 9-30\, 2014; Bull by Mike Bartlett\, directed by David Ferry is currently on stage; and Creditors by August Strindberg\, directed by Rae Ellen Bodie\, will cap the inaugural season of sharp\, smart\, in-your-face theatre.

DESCRIPTION:The Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company is proud to present the world premiere of mother and son writing team\, Kathy Kacer and Jake Epstein’s THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE\,which will also launch the company’s residency at the new Greenwin Theatre at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.\n\nHolocaust survivor Joseph moved to Canada and made a life for himself\, settling down with Evelyn\, a charming Canadian woman. SUMMARY:Jose Gonzalez Performs At The Phoenix Concert Theatre
DESCRIPTION:José González ‘s new record\, Vestiges & Claws is his first in seven years. Released on February 17th 2015\, it was produced by González in his home as well as Svenska Grammofonstudion\, both in Gothenburg\, Sweden. It consists of years’ worth of musical sketches that in other hands might naturally sprawl wildly in sound and style\, but on Vestiges & Claws González has created a collection of songs that cohere just about perfectly\, ensuring his position as one of the most important artists of his generation. \n“It was no doubt a conscious decision to work without a producer\,” said González. “I didn’t want this to be too polished\, or too ‘in your face.’ Most of all\, it’s fun to be in complete control of the artistic aspect. Also\, I was inspired by and picked up a lot of tricks from the producers I have worked with in the past. I like to use distortion and let things be a little over driven\, which gives things a warmer sound. Sometimes people complain that my music is too muddled\, but I really do not want a modern crisp sound. I’d much rather aim somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Simon & Garfunkel.” \nThe result is an album that is less purist\, less strict. One can find traces of inspired protest songs and eccentric folk rock on Vestiges & Claws: staccato grooves and rhythms\, frustration and optimism. It’s a collection that is simultaneously confident\, free and uncertain.

SUMMARY:HERETIC: A Bold New Retelling of the Story of Joan of Arc!
DESCRIPTION:Soup Can Theatre is proud to present the premiere of Heretic; a theatrical retelling of the story of Joan of Arc from critically acclaimed actor/director Sarah Thorpe. Well known for her work as the director of such hit Soup Can Theatre shows as Love is a Poverty You Can Sell\,Marat/Sade\, No Exit\, and Love is a Poverty You Can Sell 2: Kisses for a Pfennig\, Thorpe takes to the stage to bring life to the story of one of history’s most compelling characters. \nWhile only a young teenager\, Joan of Arc (the anglicized version of her proper name\, Jeanne D’Arc)\, the illiterate daughter of modest peasants\, began to hear voices and see visions of religious saints and angels who instructed her to enter the bloody fray of the Hundred Year’s War and to lead the French forces against the English. With many of her countrymen convinced of her claims of being a force sent by God\, she was quickly embraced by the nobility and the military elite and became both a leader on the front lines of battle – donning the same masculine clothes and armour as her male counterparts (a daring choice in fifteenth century Europe) – and an inspirational figurehead across France. After making pivotal gains against the English\, she was ultimately captured and charged with heresy for her declarations of divine communication. Despite putting up an impassioned and theologically profound defense\, she was found guilty by the English-led court and burned at the stake\, forever cementing her status as a martyr. \nWas Joan of Arc a holy vessel or the victim of vivid hallucinations? A headstrong warrior or a delusional young woman elevated by the hope of a nation? Heretic explores these complex facets\, illuminating the iconic character in a way that has never been seen before. \nPerformance Details:\nWhere: lemonTree {studio} Theatre – 58 Stewart St. (just south of King and Bathurst)\nWhen: April 8th to 12th (April 8th\, 9th\, and 10th at 8pm. April 11th and 12th at 2pm and 8pm.) \nTickets: Tickets range from $15 to $22 and are available at www.soupcantheatre.com\, or in person at the venue starting one hour before show time.
