Upon receiving news that his wife and young son have died under the strain of public humiliation\, and believing his newborn daughter to be not his own\, the vengeful King orders the child to be abandoned on the remote shores of Bohemia. Described by Katie Couric of NBC’s Today show as “A wonderful guy who brings music alive!”\, the convivial host and conductor works his insightful magic on one of Mozart’s last and greatest symphonies. \nThe January 16 and 17 concerts bring a splendid program displaying Mozart’s genius in three quite different musical forms. Bernard Labadie conducts the Jupiter Symphony (Mozart’s last and most invigorating symphony); the charming Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jeunehomme”\, with Alexandre Tharaud at the keyboard; and selections from Don Giovanni\, spotlighting tenor Frédéric Antoun and bass-baritone Philippe Sly. \nOn January 21\, 22\, and 23\, the magnificent\, deeply human drama of Mozart’s Requiem is brought to life as a moving theatrical event\, directed by Joel Ivany. Guaranteed to raise the spirits! \nThe Mummer Tradition\nMummering is a Newfoundland custom dating back to the earliest settlers arriving from England and Ireland. In the early years\, the tradition involved the performance of folk plays\, presented around New Year’s and old Christmas Day. While varied in detail\, the plots were consistent: a hero and villain battle\, the villain is mortally wounded.  The hero\, feeling grief at the loss of a kindred warrior\, summons a quack doctor who revives the villain through a series of outrageous cures and the enemies finally embrace in harmony. A simple story\, outlining the cycle of death and re-birth\, particularly apt at the turn of a new year. \nAs it’s currently practiced\, mummering is primarily a house-visiting tradition. During the Twelve Days of Christmas\, people disguise themselves with old articles of clothing and visit the homes of friends and neighbours\, often covering their faces with scarves\, masks or pillowcases to keep their identity hidden. Inverting the accepted rules of society is an important aspect of mummering\, so cross-dressing is common\, with men dressing as women and women as men. Travelling from house to house\, mummers will carry musical instruments to play\, sing and dance in the houses they visit. The host of these ‘mummers parties’ will serve a small lunch and perhaps some Christmas grog. \nInspired by these various traditions\, The Mummer’s Masque is fashioned from the original\, historic stories with music that blends contemporary opera and traditional folk styles. It is also the only known example of a classical solo for the Newfoundland Ugly Stick.

Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier\,” radiates with Tharp’s generous spirit and humanity. The wild and raucous humour that Tharp finds in the jazz of Henry Butler and Steve Bernstein runs rampant through YOWZIE\, the second new dance.\n\nAn artist who has crossed over all dance styles and broken boundaries in the form\, Twyla Tharp’s signature style is an eclectic integration of classical discipline and vocabulary with avant-garde rebellion.  She has choreographed more than 160 works for film\, Broadway\, Television\, even the skating rink\, and 129 dances for such companies as American Ballet Theatre\, Joffrey Ballet\, New York City Ballet\, The Boston Ballet\, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago\, The Martha Graham Dance Company\, Miami City Ballet\, Pacific Northwest Ballet\, Atlanta Ballet and Canada’s own Royal Winnipeg Ballet. DESCRIPTION:Mashrou’ Leila is a band from Beirut whose music was dubbed “the soundtrack to the Arab Spring” a few years ago. Since they were last in Canada\, they graced the cover of Rolling Stone (Middle East)\, whilst receiving an increasing number of death threats for their politically and thematically charged lyrics. The band has played to sold out crowds Canada\, Europe and Middle East\, enchanting crowds with their high energy performances and pro-rights messages. Mashrou’ Leila kick off their US and Canada tour at New York’s Miller Theatre at Columbia University.
