SUMMARY:TAPESTRY OPERA presents THE DEVIL INSIDE
DESCRIPTION:“It is one of the most interesting\, well sung and well produced pieces of opera that has been seen on the Scottish stage for quite a few years.” – Opera Britannia 2016\n\nTapestry Opera presents the North American premiere of THE DEVIL INSIDE\, a new co-production by Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales. The latest work from Britain’s trailblazing librettist-composer team\, Louise Welsh and Stuart MacRae\, THE DEVIL INSIDE is a modern Faustian tale\, “finely paced” and “immaculately crafted” according to a 5-star review in The Guardian (UK). THE DEVIL INSIDE marks the first time Scottish Opera has been presented in North America and the first time a UK Opera company has been presented in Toronto in over a hundred years.\n\nInspired by The Bottle Imp by Robert Louis Stevenson\, THE DEVIL INSIDE is an imp in a bottle who can grant every conceivable desire. The bottle can be bought and sold\, but only at a lower price each time.  And anyone who dies while in possession of the bottle goes straight to hell . . . forever. A compelling look at human nature from love and selflessness to greed and mass consumption.\n\n“This is a brilliant new work that makes you think. It is spine tingling opera.” – Opera Britannia 2016\n\nTapestry Opera and Scottish Opera have been collaborating together since 2009 following Tapestry Opera’s international LibLab: Composer-Librettist Laboratory. THE DEVIL INSIDE is their third of four collaborations\, the first being Pub Operas in 2011\, followed by M’dea Undone\, which had its world premiere May 2015 at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto. Tapestry will be premiering their fourth collaboration\, the co-commission Rocking Horse Winner\, this May.\n\nTHE DEVIL INSIDE is also the third collaboration between Librettist Louise Welsh and composer Stuart MacRae. Ghost Patrol (2011)\, which followed their first partnership Five: 15 Operas Made in Scotland (2009)\, was a critical success and winner of the exclusive 2013 South Bank Sky Award for Opera. Also a British crime writer\, Louise Welsh is the author of six novels including The Girl on the Stairs (2012) and A Lovely Way to Burn (2014). Scottish Composer Stuart MacRae was writing powerfully expressive works in his mid-twenties receiving commissions from such organizations as the BBC and the London Sinfonietta and being appointed as Composer-in-Association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. His 52 completed compositions include works for opera\, theatre\, orchestra\, ensembles and soloists.\n\nGhost Patrol’s director Matthew Richardson and conductor Michael Rafferty lead the cast of mezzo-soprano Rachel Kelly\, a recent graduate of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme; baritone Ben McAteer\, a 2015/16 Scottish Opera Emerging Artist; tenor Nicholas Sharratt (The Pirates of Penzance 2013\, Ghost Patrol 2012); baritone Steven Page (The Rake’s Progress 2011\, The Pirates of Penzance 2013); and players of the Scottish Opera Orchestra.\n\nTapestry Opera continues to drive the evolution of opera with an innovative 36th season\, which concludes with the world premiere of ROCKING HORSE WINNER\, another Scottish Opera co-commission\, May 27 – June 4 at Berkeley Street Theatre-Downstairs.

SUMMARY:Factory Theatre Presents A LINE IN THE SAND
DESCRIPTION:There’s a thin line between brutality and bravery. Factory presents A LINE IN THE SAND\, written by Guillermo Verdecchia\, Marcus Youssef\, directed by Nigel Shawn Williams\, and starring John Cleland\, Danny Ghantous\, and Morgan David Jones. \n\n\n“Naked is the paring down of artifice to expose the natural and beautiful content of the play.” \n– Nigel Shawn Williams\n\n\nNigel Shawn Williams directs the gripping story of an unlikely friendship between a troubled Canadian soldier and a 16-year-old Palestinian boy who meet in the scorched Qatari desert during Operation Desert Shield. Their secret and tenuous friendship comes to an abrupt end with the torture and murder of the teenager inside the Canadian base; an act to which his friend the soldier was a witness\, if not a willing participant. \n \nTwenty years ago\, A LINE IN THE SAND ripped the benevolent mask off western peacekeeping operations and challenged Canada’s long treasured mythology that it is a nation of quiet diplomats. With the current discussions to end Canadian air strikes against ISIS in Iraq\, A LINE IN THE SAND continues to challenge Canada’s participation in war and the many brutal acts committed in its name.\n \nA LINE IN THE SAND was created in 1995 for the New Play Centre (now Playwrights Centre in Vancouver)\, and was revised and produced at Tarragon Theatre a year later. The production was also staged at Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage Festival in Toronto in 1996\, directed by Verdecchia. It won the Chalmers Best New Play Award in 1997\, and three MECCA Awards (Montréal English Critics Circle Awards) in 2009. \n \nGuillermo Verdecchia is a director\, playwright\, dramaturge\, and reluctant actor. He is the recipient of the Governor-General’s Award for Drama for his play Fonteras Americanas and a four-time winner of the Chalmers Canadian Play Award. His work\, which includes the Governor General shortlisted Noam Chomsky Lectures (with Daniel Brooks)\, the Adventures of Ali & Ali (with Marcus Youssef and Camyar Chai)\, and Another Country has been anthologized\, translated into Spanish and Italian\, and produced in Europe and the US. He is a Resident Artist with Soulpepper Theatre where he heads New Play Development. \n \nA LINE IN THE SAND\, the Chalmers Award-winning play\, was Marcus Youssef’s first full-length work\, and the first of three collaborations with Guillermo Verdecchia. His other plays include Winners and Losers\, Leftovers\, Jabber\, How Has My Love Affected You?\, Ali and Ali and the aXes of Evil\, Adrift\, and Peter Panties. These have been performed at major festivals and theatres across North America\, Australia and Europe and have been translated into multiple languages and published by Talonbooks and Playwrights Canada Press. Marcus co-founded the East Van artist-run production centre Progress Lab 1422 and is artistic director of Vancouver’s Neworld Theatre.\n \nA LINE IN THE SAND features performances by Dora Award-Winner John Cleland as Colonel (Late Company/Theatre Centre\, This is War/Prairie Theatre Exchange\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream/Canadian Stage); Ryerson Theatre School student  Danny Ghantous as Sadiq (You Can’t Take it With You\, Adult Entertainment\, Filthy Rich//Ryerson Theatre); and Australian-born Toronto- based Morgan David Jones as Mercer (A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Cate Blanchett/Sydney Theatre Company\, Romeo and J uliet/Citadel Theatre).\n \nStripped down to the most fundamental and striking elements\, the Naked Season pares down theatre to a series of pure encounters between the audience\, the actors\, and the text. A LINE IN THE SAND is presented as part of a seasonette that also includes: SALT-WATER MOON\, written by David French\, and directed by Ravi Jain\, February 23 – March 13 in the Mainspace Theatre; and THE CRACKWALKER\, written and directed by Judith Thompson\, March 22 – April 10 in the Mainspace Theatre.

SUMMARY:Mouth Congress with Scott Thompson
DESCRIPTION:MOUTH CONGRESS\, a reference to oral sex found in the Sir Richard Burton translation of the Kama Sutra\, was founded in 1984 when Paul Bellini rented a beatbox from Long & McQuade so he and Scott Thompson could jam around the big freezer in their basement. \nAn openly gay punk band at a time when no other existed\, Paul and Scott spent a year writing songs before their first gig\, opening for Bruce McCulloch at The Rivoli. Seemingly destined for greatness\, MOUTH CONGRESS played gigs around Toronto building a cult following.\n\nThey cut a demo in 1986\, which was never released due to Thompson’s increasing success with The Kids in the Hall\, and MOUTH CONGRESS quietly became a Queen Street urban legend.\n\nOver the last few years\, Paul Bellini (who went on to write for KITH) has digitally compiled MOUTH CONGRESS’ entire catalogue of 647 recordings—available atwww.mouthcongress.bandcamp.com—as well as video of every live show plus other ‘home’ movies from the day.\n\n24 years since their last gig\, and 32 years since they were originally formed\, MOUTH CONGRESS will reunite for one night only at The Rivoli on Sunday\, February 21 for an hour of the most ridiculous yet committed rock ’n’ roll since Spinal Tap!\n\nThe evening will be recorded as part of the ongoing documentation of MOUTH CONGRESS.

SUMMARY:World Stage 2016 presents BADKE
DESCRIPTION:Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage 2016 will present the Canadian premiere of Badke\, a highly energetic\, politically charged and stylistically diverse performance by 10 Palestinian dancers who integrate the movements of circus\, capoeira and hip hop into traditional folk dance. Only four performances will be presented February 17 – 20 at the Fleck Dance Theatre.\n\nThe title Badke is a play on the Arabic social folk dance “dabke” and the production expresses the universal desire to belong through its fusion of the traditional and contemporary\, and the local and global. These diasporic artists\, who have trained outside of their home country\, perform the traditional dance and infuse it with new proposals\, vocabularies and ideas.\n\n“Badke begins in celebration and one feels the joy of communal dancing; reminding us that dance is a universal\, borderless language\,” explains Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen. “But as the aerobic\, bacchanalian mood heats up\, the tenor shifts and we begin to see isolation\, anxiety\, fear\, and images of protest\, persecution and people under siege. Given the recent terrors on the global stage\, Badke is an accurate and artful reflection of our shared humanity.”\n\nBadke is a collaboration between Belgian choreographers Koen Augustijnen\, Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Hildegard De Vuyst and the Palestinian performers who weave between solo dances and vigorous group pieces all set to an infectious party music score by Naser Al-Fares.\n\nThis is a co-production between the prolific and groundbreaking KVS (the Brussels City Theatre)\, les ballets C de la B\, and the A.M. Qattan Foundation\, which administers the Palestinian Performing Arts Network.\n\nBadke has received rave reviews from both the media and audiences:\n\n“It’s rowdy\, cheerful and explosively danced.” The Independent (UK)\n“A hurricane of energy\, smiles and leaping bodies. Badke offers an hour of amazing moments of collective dance performed by ten Palestinian performers.” – Le Soir (Belgium)\n“It’s all about survival and the infectious joy of dancing.” Theaterkrant (Netherlands)\n\nSpecial discussions will complement these Badke performances (free with ticket purchase):\n\nFebruary 17: Pre-show Tea on Opening Night with World Stage’s Scholars-in-Residence from the University of Toronto\, Denise Cruz and Matthew Sergi.\nFebruary 18: Post-show “Talkshow” invites the audience to connect with the artists who will answer questions about the performance.\n\nSince its inaugural season 30 years ago in 1986\, World Stage continues to present groundbreaking contemporary performances from around the world. The 2016 season\, curated by Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen\, includes seven international theatre\, dance and multidisciplinary\nperformances from Belgium\, Canada\, England\, France\, Germany\, the Netherlands and Palestine.\n\nIn addition to Badke\, World Stage 2016’s impressive and eclectic season includes:\nThe World Stage Mirror Ball: January 30\, Harbourfront Centre Theatre\nGerminal: January 20 – 23\, Fleck Dance Theatre\nPortraits in Motion: April 13–16\, Harbourfront Centre Theatre\nLooking for Paul: Inez van Dam vs. the Buttplug Gnome: April 27–30\, Harbourfront Centre Theatre\nSteer: May 11–14\, Fleck Dance Theatre\nBackstage in Biscuit Land: May 25–28\, Harbourfront Centre Theatre\nEvery Song I’ve Ever Written: June 9\, The Power Plant & June 11\, WestJet Stage

SUMMARY:The Winter's Tale - Coal Mine Theatre Production
DESCRIPTION:Groundling Theatre Company’s inaugural production\, a full staging of William Shakespeare’s THE WINTER’S TALE\, will be presented as part of the Coal Mine Theatre’s second season of adventurous theatre. One of the most psychologically engaging romances in the English language\, this intimate chamber production of THE WINTER’S TALE will be directed by Graham Abbey\, founder and artistic director of Groundling Theatre Company.\n\nWritten near the end of his career\, and considered to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest masterpieces\, The Winter’s Tale chronicles the descent of Leontes\, King of Sicilia into a world of jealousy\, murder and conspiracy when he falsely accuses his queen Hermione (Michelle Giroux) of an infidelity with his oldest friend Polixenes (Patrick Galligan). Upon receiving news that his wife and young son have died under the strain of public humiliation\, and believing his newborn daughter to be not his own\, the vengeful King orders the child to be abandoned on the remote shores of Bohemia. When divine intervention plants the seeds of forgiveness and rebirth\, the possibility of faith is reawakened.\n\n“I’ve had a lot of loss in my life in recent years\, and I’ve found great solace and understanding coming from the late romances of Shakespeare. It’s a place where issues of loss and redemption can be worked out and the possibility of rebirth and forgiveness is actually something you can reach out and touch. THE WINTER’S TALE begins happily\, then rapidly descends into darkness until the moment when a child’s life is spared. Then we start the slow\, steady journey back into the light once again.” Graham Abbey in The Toronto Star\, November 2015\n\nFeaturing a compact cast of ten actors\, most with Stratford Festival pedigree\, THE WINTER’S TALE stars Tom McCamus as Leontes\, Brent Carver as Autolycus\, Mark Crawford as the Clown\, Charlie Gallant as Florizel\, Patrick Galligan as Polixenes\,Michelle Giroux as Hermione\, Roy Lewis as Camillo\, Sarena Parmar as Perdita\, Lucy Peacock as Paulina\, and Robert Persichini as Old Shepherd\, with set and lighting design by Steve Lucas\, costume design by Michael Gianfrancesco and live original music by George Meanwell.\n\nThe Groundling Theatre Company was launched in 2012 by Dora Award-winner Graham Abbey (Sixteen seasons with Stratford Shakespeare Festival; The Border on CBC TV and Remedy on Global Television; Afghanada on CBC Radio; feature filmsTake This Waltz directed by Sarah Polley\, Defendor with Woody Harrelson\, and the upcoming Milton’s Secret with Donald Sutherland) to produce imaginative\, original and accessible productions of Shakespeare’s plays\, as well as works inspired by Shakespeare\, to educate and inspire a new generation of audiences and artists.  While presenting Shakespeare out of its traditional context and during the Bard’s traditional off-season\, Groundling Theatre can re-examine and re-interpret the canon for new personal and political revelations still to be found in their timeless themes.\n\nCoal Mine Theatre is an independent theatre company curated by Ted Dykstra and Diana Bentley. The 2015/16 Season consists of: The River written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Ted Dykstra (Nov 1-22\, 2015); Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale directed by Graham Abbey/A Groundling Theatre Company production (Jan 26 – Feb 21\, 2016); Killer Joe written by Tracy Letts and directed by Peter Pasyk/presented in association with Surface/Underground (April 3-24\, 2016); andInstructions (To Any Future Socialist Government Wishing To Abolish Christmas) written by Michael Mackenzie and directed by David Storch (May 29 – June 19\, 2016).\n\nA Groundling Theatre Production presented by Coal Mine Theatre\nTHE WINTER’S TALE\nWritten by William Shakespeare • Directed by Graham Abbey\nFeaturing Brent Carver\, Mark Crawford\, Charlie Gallant\, Patrick Galligan\, Michelle Giroux\,\nRoy Lewis\, Tom McCamus\, Sarena Parmar\, Lucy Peacock\, Robert Persichini\nSet and Lighting Design by Steve Lucas • Costume Design by Michael Gianfrancesco\nLive Original Music by George Meanwell • Produced by Anna Kajtar for Groundling Theatre\n\nCOAL MINE THEATRE\n– New Location for the remainder of 2016 Season –\n1454 Danforth Avenue\, Toronto\n(beside the new location of The Magic Oven near Coxwell Avenue)\nJanuary 26 – February 20\, 2016\nOpening Night: Thursday\, January 28\, 2016 @ 7:30pm\nTuesday-Sunday at 7:30pm\nTickets: Previews $25 • Regular $35 • Rush at the door 30 mins prior to performance $30\nSunday Pay-What-You-Want • Groups 15+ $20\nTo order tickets visit groundlingtheatre.com\n\n@GroundlingCo •  @coalminetheatre •  facebook.com/Groundling/ • facebook.com/coalminetheatre/\n

SUMMARY:TSO Mozart@260 Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) rings in the new year in style\, celebrating one of the most prolific and beloved composers ever with its annual Mozart Festival. TheMozart@260 Festival—curated by Quebec-based conductor Bernard Labadie—includes the famous Symphony No. 40 as part of the popular What Makes It Great?® series\, a splendid program featuring the Jupiter Symphony and more\, and a gripping semi-staged production of the Requiem. The TSO then presents Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz\, and welcomes back Canadian sopranoBarbara Hannigan for a second time this season. \nOn January 15\, the Mozart@260 Festival kicks off with a performance of the famous Symphony No. 40\, led by Rob Kapilow. Described by Katie Couric of NBC’s Today show as “A wonderful guy who brings music alive!”\, the convivial host and conductor works his insightful magic on one of Mozart’s last and greatest symphonies. \nThe January 16 and 17 concerts bring a splendid program displaying Mozart’s genius in three quite different musical forms. Bernard Labadie conducts the Jupiter Symphony (Mozart’s last and most invigorating symphony); the charming Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jeunehomme”\, with Alexandre Tharaud at the keyboard; and selections from Don Giovanni\, spotlighting tenor Frédéric Antoun and bass-baritone Philippe Sly. \nOn January 21\, 22\, and 23\, the magnificent\, deeply human drama of Mozart’s Requiem is brought to life as a moving theatrical event\, directed by Joel Ivany. Soprano Lydia Teuscher\, mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy\, tenor Frédéric Antoun\, and bass-baritone Philippe Sly\, joined by the Amadeus Choir and the Elmer Iseler Singers\, shed a whole new light on the composer’s stirring\, final\, unfinished masterpiece\, now completed by renowned scholar Robert Levin\, under the direction of Bernard Labadie. The first portion of the evening features the TSO Chamber Soloists performing an excerpt from the gorgeous Clarinet Quintet in A Major. \nOn January 27 and 28\, the always extraordinary soprano Barbara Hannigan returns to the TSO for Henri Dutilleux’s mystical song cycle\, Correspondances. “The soprano’s voice is perfect for Dutilleux’s music\, sharing its trademark sensuousness\, poise and precision\,” reported the Financial Times\, “and she remains a formidable dramatic presence…a tough act to follow.” The evening\, under the direction of Peter Oundjian\, also includes music by Sibelius\, and Berlioz’s fanciful Symphonie fantastique. \nPeter Oundjian and the Orchestra reprise Symphonie fantastique on January 30. This concert also highlights the TSO’s remarkable Principal Horn Neil Deland who performs one of the landmarks of the repertoire\, the Horn Concerto No. 1 by R. Strauss. \n\nTwitter: @TorontoSymphony\nFacebook: facebook.com/torontosymphonyorchestra\nYouTube: youtube.com/torontosymphony \nInstagram: instagram.com/torontosymphony \nJANUARY 2016 CONCERT LISTINGS\nAll concerts are at Roy Thomson Hall\, 60 Simcoe Street\, unless otherwise noted.\nCall the TSO ticket line at 416.598.3375 or order tickets online at TSO.CA.

Enjoy a glass Christmas grog and experience composer Dean Burry’s rollicking alternative to your usual seasonal offerings; a celebration of the 400-year-old Newfoundland holiday tradition of mummering featuring music\, dance and storytelling. \nThe beautiful Enoch Turner Schoolhouse is the perfect venue for this Mummer telling of the adventures of St. George (soprano Carla Huhtanen)\, his encounters with a rival knight and dragon (both played by mezzo-soprano Marion Newman) and romantic shenanigans with the mysterious Princess Zebra (tenor Christopher Mayell). Hosted by Father Christmas (baritone Giles Tomkins) the evening features singers from the Canadian Children’s Opera Company along with performances from step dancers Pierre Chartrand and Hannah Shira Naiman. \nAt the heart of the festivities is an all-star jug band led from the violin by Artistic Director Larry Beckwith\, featuring Andrew Downing\, double bass\, Ian Harper\, flute\, penny whistle\, uillean pipes\, Joseph Macerollo\, accordion\, Terry McKenna\, bouzouki\, guitar and Ed Reifel\, percussion. \nThis evening of dance\, music\, drama\, stage combat and puppetry is directed by Derek Boyes and will have young and old tapping their toes and laughing uproariously. Guaranteed to raise the spirits! \nThe Mummer Tradition\nMummering is a Newfoundland custom dating back to the earliest settlers arriving from England and Ireland. In the early years\, the tradition involved the performance of folk plays\, presented around New Year’s and old Christmas Day. While varied in detail\, the plots were consistent: a hero and villain battle\, the villain is mortally wounded.  The hero\, feeling grief at the loss of a kindred warrior\, summons a quack doctor who revives the villain through a series of outrageous cures and the enemies finally embrace in harmony. A simple story\, outlining the cycle of death and re-birth\, particularly apt at the turn of a new year. \nAs it’s currently practiced\, mummering is primarily a house-visiting tradition. During the Twelve Days of Christmas\, people disguise themselves with old articles of clothing and visit the homes of friends and neighbours\, often covering their faces with scarves\, masks or pillowcases to keep their identity hidden. Inverting the accepted rules of society is an important aspect of mummering\, so cross-dressing is common\, with men dressing as women and women as men. Travelling from house to house\, mummers will carry musical instruments to play\, sing and dance in the houses they visit. The host of these ‘mummers parties’ will serve a small lunch and perhaps some Christmas grog. \nInspired by these various traditions\, The Mummer’s Masque is fashioned from the original\, historic stories with music that blends contemporary opera and traditional folk styles. It is also the only known example of a classical solo for the Newfoundland Ugly Stick.
