SUMMARY:Ta-ku at The Opera House
DESCRIPTION:Australian producer Ta-ku releases his new collaborative (m)edian EP with fellow Aussie and rising singer Wafia today via Future Classic. The EP is a collection of beautifully crafted and highly vulnerable songs where both artists speak candidly on themes of relationships\, compromise and sacrifice. \nStarting in 2015 and after much collaboration\, the duo\, Regan Matthews and Wafia Al-Rikabi\, released their breakout take on Estelle’s “American Boy” with their aptly titled “American Girl”(over 2.3 millions Soundcloud plays) and shortly after debuted their joint live act during Ta-ku’s MoMA PS1 show (1 of only 2 US shows). This spawned the duo’s (m)edian EP sessions in early 2016 that also included Wafia’s trusted collaborators Thomston and Ben Abraham. After solidifying a bond around their experiences with their fathers\, they poured those feelings into (m)edian\, which resulted in a raw confessional that unearthed a bedrock of complicated emotions traced to heritage\, family\, and faithfulness.\n\n“I guess it’s a tribute to unconditional love. Whether that be platonic\, romantic\, or family. It’s about loving someone unrequitedly.” – WAFIA\n“Which is never easy. Sometimes with a partner or parent or friend\, you might feel like it’s a battle. But it’s a battle because you’re sure it’s the right thing to do.” – TA-KU \n\nFollowing a spree of sold out shows in Europe and Australia\, Ta-ku will be kicking off his first ever national headlining US tour featuring Wafia in Los Angeles on September 21 and wrapping at Miami’s III Points festival on October 8. All shows will feature their elaborate new set with a full band and artful original visuals from frequent collaborator Sam Price.\nTA-KU SOCIALS: \nwww.takumusic.com/\nwww.soundcloud.com/takugotbeats\nwww.facebook.com/takugotbeats\nwww.twitter.com/takubeats\nwww.instagram.com/takubeats\n\nWAFIA SOCIALS:\nwww.soundcloud.com/wafia\nwww.facebook.com/WafiaMusic\nwww.twitter.com/Wafiaaa\nwww.instagram.com/wafiaaa/\n\nPhoto credit: Johnny Castle

SUMMARY:THE THREEPENNY OPERA: IN CONCERT - One Day Only!
DESCRIPTION:Soup Can Theatre is kicking off the month of Halloween with our favourite musical and the inspiration for our Toronto Fringe hits Love is a Poverty You Can Sell I and II: an in-concert version of THE THREEPENNY OPERA – a dark play with music full of crime\, greed\, lust\, dark humour\, and biting social commentary that chronicles the exploits of antiheroic criminal Macheath (aka ‘Mack the Knife’) against the backdrop of 19th century London’s seedy underworld. With a haunting score and message\, THE THREEPENNY OPERA is Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s most famous collaboration from the Weimar Era. \nTo put a spin on things\, there will be 3 PERFORMANCES in ONE DAY! Sunday October 2nd at 4pm\, 6:30pm\, and 9pm at the historic Monarch Tavern in the heart of Little Italy. In addition\, just 3 PERFORMERS will be playing ALL the roles: Scott Garland (2016 Dora Award Nominee for Three Men in a Boat)\, Christian Jeffries (from our Love is a Poverty You Can Sell cabarets)\, and Sarah Thorpe (Soup Can co-founder\, MyTheatre’s 2015 Fan Favourite Award winner for Heretic)\, under the baton of our musical director Pratik Gandhi (music director of the Rouge River Winds and resident conductor at Toy Piano Composers)\, who helmed the music on our productions of Circle Jerk\, A Hand of Bridge\, Marat/Sade\, and Love is a Poverty You Can Sell I and II.

SUMMARY:In The Whale Rocks Out At Horseshoe Tavern
DESCRIPTION:In The Whale\, are performing at The Horseshoe Tavern on Monday\, September 26th as part of their North American tour with Electric Six. The two-piece rock band from Denver\, CO recently released their new single “American Eyes”\, the first track off their upcoming EP Quicksand\, out October 21st. It’s worth a listen: “American Eyes” Stream: https://soundcloud.com/in-the-whale/american-eyes/ \n  \nIn the Whale’s music resonates with anyone thirsting for the time when bands simply rocked. That nostalgia\, and the Denver\, CO based duo’s need for a vehicle to figure out a way to navigate a world that’s quick to judge and write-off a book by its cover is the foundation for their alternative-punk-blues sound that is showcased on the band’s new EP\, Quicksand. \nCelebrating their five year anniversary in 2016\, the band has grown significantly from thanks to a relentless tour schedule and a live show that’s likened to a sonic boom.  Artists and festival promoter s have caught notice with the band playing Riot Fest\, Lollapalooza\, Austin City Limits and over 400 shows with the likes of Jane’s Addiction\, the Toadies\, Electric 6 and many more. \nInstead of boasting themselves\, Nate Valdez (guitar/vocals) and Eric Riley (drums/vocals) said\, “the Chicago Tribune described us best\, ‘Stripped down to a simple essence\, the band’s hard-edged fare scampers\, thrusts and giddily thrashes…Dirty\, fun and caked in garage grime\, the songs are unconcerned with trends.’  Ok\, we have a show to play.”

DESCRIPTION:With a host of unparalleled accolades that stretch across the realms of music\, it is without question that Martin Buttrich has solidified his name as one of the all time great underground acts. SUMMARY:THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
DESCRIPTION:Driftwood Theatre Group is proud to present the ultimate battle of the sexes\, William Shakespeare’s THE TAMING OF T HE SHREW\, as it rolls across Ontario this summer forThe Bard’s Bus Tour. This unique production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW is set in 1989 during the Toronto Pride Festival and explores themes of sexuality\, consent and the exchange of power. \nFrom July 8 – August 14\, The Bard’s Bus Tour will bring this fiery romantic comedy to 28 locations across Ontario in only 39 days. For 22 years\, The Bard’s Bus Tour has brought professional pay-what-you-can performances of classic plays to outdoor locations in small towns and city neighbourhoods across the province. \nD. Jeremy Smith (Director)\, Founder and Artistic Director of Driftwood Theatre Group\, has directed\, performed in\, designed and painted over 25 productions for the company. Other select theatre credits include Northern Lights\, Eas tern Fire (Canadian Sinfonietta)\,The Odyssey and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Grand Theatre)\, Memorial (Next Stage Theatre Festival 2013)\, and Pélagie (Assistant Director\, Canadian Stage/National Arts Centre). \nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW stars actor and fight director Siobhan Richardson (And Then The Lights Went Out\, Mo and Jess Kill Susie) as Kate; l’École International de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq (Paris) graduate Geoffrey Armour (Hatchlings and Hayseeds\,Fool’s Gold) as Petruchio; actor\, singer and composer Tahirih Vejdani (Elektra\, Much Ado About Nothing) as Bianca; Newfoundland-born actor Renee Hackett (Myth of The Ostrich\, Tempting Providence) as Baptista; Artistic Director of Everybody to the Theatre Company Drew O’Hara (The Merry Wives of Windsor\, Shakespeare by the Sea) as Hortensio; Soulpepper Theatre company member and Dora Award-winnerPaolo Santalucia (Hamlet for Driftwood 2015\, Of Human Bondage\,) as Tranio\, and George Brown Theatre School graduate Fiona Sauder (American Idiot\, Les Misérables) as Lucentio. \nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW\, set against the exuberant backdrop of Toronto Pride and including all things quintessentially 80s from Prince to Pretty in Pink\, offers a modern look at acceptance and equality between people of colour\, people of all gender identities and people of all sexual orientations. \nTwenty years after the Stonewall Riots\, the 1989 Toronto Pride was a time of i ntrospection but also a time to look to the future. With the slogan “20/20: Setting Our Sights” it was a year culminating in social\, sexual and racial advances: intersectionality was first coined\, a temporary AIDS memorial stood in the then-named Cawthra Square Park\, and the iconic Church Street bar Woody’s first opened its doors. \nFounded in 1995\, Driftwood Theatre Group is Ontario’s first and longest-running outdoor touring theatre tradition. Working with the best emerging and established artists today\, the annual Bard’s Bus Tour travels to parks and heritage sites across the province\, focusing on communities with little or no access to professional theatre. Believing that great theatre is only of value if an audience has access to it\,Driftwood Theatre Group’s annual Bard’s Bus Tour is alway s Pay-What-You-Can admission. \n\nDriftwood Theatre Group presents\nWilliam Shakespeare’s\nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW\nThe Bard’s Bus Tour\nJuly 8 – August 14\, 2016\n\n\nAll performances start at 7:30PM\nAdmission is Pay-What-You-Can ($20 suggested)\nReservations can be purchased at $20/person by calling 844.601.8057 or online at www.driftwoodtheatre.com\nChair and blanket rentals available!\n\n

SUMMARY:Délon at the Mod Club
DESCRIPTION:Delon is a rising pop artist who is gearing up to release his debut album. Recently\, Delon performed with Ginuwine\, for which he received a great reception from fans and music industry insiders. Delon also was a former contestant on Canadian Idol where he was the runner-up and led him to sign a contract with Sony/Ultra records. Now\, Delon is about to release his debut album\, which is filled with infectious pop songs that are poised to be global hits. Delon also teaches and is completing his PhD in social sciences at York University where he seeks to combat social injustices. Emerging from the gentrified enclaves of the suburbs in the GTA\, Délon Omrow is poised to play a revolutionary role in the music industry. Of South American and Caribbean descent\, he draws upon his robust passion for social justice and the arts in visceral and dynamic ways. Interweaving principles of philosophy with theosophy\, identity is presented not as a static element\, but as dynamic and forever-shifting. From agonizing heart-break to the hope of a just society\, each composition artistically captures the vagaries of human existence and consciousness. His first undertaking in the music industry was his inclusion as a runner up in Canadian Idol 2007. Unscathed by this\, he pursued his steadfast love for music by embarking upon a journey\, forever changing his life: song-writing. After a short time\, Délon Omrow joined forces with his cousin\, Sean Hakim\, to form the dynamic pop-trio Starchild X. It was with this group that he would have his first taste of fame. After co-writing a mere one song with his producer\, Sheldon Moore\, the group was catapulted to instant stardom when Virgin Radio 95.5 welcomed the single “Superstar” into rotation in 2012. It didn’t take long for the record labels to take heed of this: the group was courted by both Sony and Ultra Records.

This second album deals with the realities of re concilin g oneself after the culture shock of immigrating\, but is also an new electronic project that utilizes its live shows to experiment with sounds in different ways\, which typically ends up in pretty fun dance parties. \nTheir sound is a blend of various influences of electronic and pop music\, touching upon themes of self discovery through immigration and adapting to new environments. The band then took their work to long time collaborator\, friend and producer Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes). SUMMARY:World Stage presents LOOKING FOR PAUL
DESCRIPTION:World Stage 2016 continues with the Canadian premiere of Looking for Paul: Inez van Dam vs. the Buttplug Gnome\, a big\, messy avant-garde performance that questions the role of public art. Four performances only will be presented April 27-30 at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in this genre-colliding work.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInez van Dam lives and works in Rotterdam opposite the so-called “Buttplug Gnome\,” a controversial sculpture by contemporary American artist Paul McCarthy. Her anger and aversion for this publicly funded art circuitously leads her to the Dutch-Flemish actors’ group Wunderbaum. They invite Van Dam to travel with them to Los Angeles to help her confront McCarthy and to create a new theatre piece documenting her journey and the artistic process. The resulting work explodes — sometimes very messily — in to a debate on aesthetics\, politics and the meaning of public art in a forum that is wild\, witty and rabidly unconcerned with decorum.\n\n“Looking for Paul is a funny\, smart and engaging work that both parodies and pays homage to our relationship to art and the artist who created it . . . in this case\, infamous contemporary artist Paul McCarthy\,” explains Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen.\n\nLooking for Paul has garnered critical acclaim in the theatre world:\n\n“With boldness and humour\, Wunderbaum reminds us that the only art worth making is that which disrupts\, challenges and tests artists and audiences.” The Guardian (UK)\n“Easily the funniest and most audacious thin g I saw all year.” Out West Arts (Los Angeles)\n“It is a slick\, clever production that should not be missed.” Broadway Baby (UK)\n\nSpecial discussions will complement these Looking for Paul performances (free with ticket purchase):\n\nApril 27: Pre-show Tea on Opening Night with Denise Cruz\, one of World Stage’s Scholars-in-Residence from the University of Toronto.\nApril 28: Post-show “talkshow” invites the audience to connect with the artists who will answer questions about the performance.\n\nSince its inaugural season 30 years ago in 1986\, World Stage continues to present groundbreaking contemporary performances from around the world. The 2016 season\, curated by Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen\, includes seven international theatre\, dance and multidisciplinary performances from Belgium\, Canada\, England\, France\, Germany\, the Netherlands and Palestine.
