SUMMARY:THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
DESCRIPTION:Driftwood Theatre Group is proud to present the ultimate battle of the sexes\, William Shakespeare’s THE TAMING OF T HE SHREW\, as it rolls across Ontario this summer forThe Bard’s Bus Tour. This unique production of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW is set in 1989 during the Toronto Pride Festival and explores themes of sexuality\, consent and the exchange of power. \nFrom July 8 – August 14\, The Bard’s Bus Tour will bring this fiery romantic comedy to 28 locations across Ontario in only 39 days. For 22 years\, The Bard’s Bus Tour has brought professional pay-what-you-can performances of classic plays to outdoor locations in small towns and city neighbourhoods across the province. \nD. Jeremy Smith (Director)\, Founder and Artistic Director of Driftwood Theatre Group\, has directed\, performed in\, designed and painted over 25 productions for the company. Other select theatre credits include Northern Lights\, Eas tern Fire (Canadian Sinfonietta)\,The Odyssey and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (The Grand Theatre)\, Memorial (Next Stage Theatre Festival 2013)\, and Pélagie (Assistant Director\, Canadian Stage/National Arts Centre). \nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW stars actor and fight director Siobhan Richardson (And Then The Lights Went Out\, Mo and Jess Kill Susie) as Kate; l’École International de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq (Paris) graduate Geoffrey Armour (Hatchlings and Hayseeds\,Fool’s Gold) as Petruchio; actor\, singer and composer Tahirih Vejdani (Elektra\, Much Ado About Nothing) as Bianca; Newfoundland-born actor Renee Hackett (Myth of The Ostrich\, Tempting Providence) as Baptista; Artistic Director of Everybody to the Theatre Company Drew O’Hara (The Merry Wives of Windsor\, Shakespeare by the Sea) as Hortensio; Soulpepper Theatre company member and Dora Award-winnerPaolo Santalucia (Hamlet for Driftwood 2015\, Of Human Bondage\,) as Tranio\, and George Brown Theatre School graduate Fiona Sauder (American Idiot\, Les Misérables) as Lucentio. \nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW\, set against the exuberant backdrop of Toronto Pride and including all things quintessentially 80s from Prince to Pretty in Pink\, offers a modern look at acceptance and equality between people of colour\, people of all gender identities and people of all sexual orientations. \nTwenty years after the Stonewall Riots\, the 1989 Toronto Pride was a time of i ntrospection but also a time to look to the future. With the slogan “20/20: Setting Our Sights” it was a year culminating in social\, sexual and racial advances: intersectionality was first coined\, a temporary AIDS memorial stood in the then-named Cawthra Square Park\, and the iconic Church Street bar Woody’s first opened its doors. \nFounded in 1995\, Driftwood Theatre Group is Ontario’s first and longest-running outdoor touring theatre tradition. Working with the best emerging and established artists today\, the annual Bard’s Bus Tour travels to parks and heritage sites across the province\, focusing on communities with little or no access to professional theatre. Believing that great theatre is only of value if an audience has access to it\,Driftwood Theatre Group’s annual Bard’s Bus Tour is alway s Pay-What-You-Can admission. \n\nDriftwood Theatre Group presents\nWilliam Shakespeare’s\nTHE TAMING OF THE SHREW\nThe Bard’s Bus Tour\nJuly 8 – August 14\, 2016\n\n\nAll performances start at 7:30PM\nAdmission is Pay-What-You-Can ($20 suggested)\nReservations can be purchased at $20/person by calling 844.601.8057 or online at www.driftwoodtheatre.com\nChair and blanket rentals available!\n\n

SUMMARY:Coal Mine Theatre presents INSTRUCTIONS
DESCRIPTION:Coal Mine Theatre presents the Toronto premiere of the edgy and electric INSTRUCTIONS (TO ANY FUTURE SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT WISHING TO ABOLISH CHRISTMAS)from May 29 – June 19. Written by Canadian playwright Michael Mackenzie\, directed by David Storch and starring Coal Mine’s Artistic Curator Ted Dykstra and Artistic Producer Diana Bentley\, this modern-day two-hander examines the shifting and suspect forces that drive the global financial system. \nSet in 2008 against the panic-stricken backdrop of the U.S. financial collapse\, a ruthless hedge fund manager in the midst of market chaos\, gets a surprise visit from his brilliant yet troubled assistant who has just returned from an enforced sabbatical. Their intense interactions swing between humorous and tender to crude and cunning as they examine the financial mess and interrogate each other about their work and motives. \nEqual parts thriller and Greek tragedy\, emotions\, numbers and words collide in a frantic yet controlled rhythm made all the more dramatic by Mackenzie’s breathtaking use of language and his perceptive take on the global economy. \nMichael Mackenzie is a Canadian film and theatre director\, screenwriter\, playwright and dramaturge best known for his play Geometry in Venice; his feature film The Baroness and the Pig\, an adaptation of his play; and his Genie Award-winning screenplay Le Polygraphe\, co-written with Robert Lepage and Marie Brassard. \nDirector David Storch has performed or directed at most major theatre companies in Canada.  He recently helmed The Road to Mecca (Soulpepper) and has appeared in Cake and Dirt (Tarragon Theatre) and Arigato\, Tokyo (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre). \nINSTRUCTIONS was originally commissioned by Crow’s Theatre and premiered at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre in 2011\, directed by Chris Abraham with Dykstra originating the role of Jason. \nActor\, writer and director Ted Dykstra is known internationally for 2 Pianos 4 Hands\, his wildly successful collaboration with Richard Greenblatt.  For Coal Mine Theatre\, Dykstra appeared in the inaugural production of The Motherf**ker With The Hat and directed the second season premiere\, The River. \nActor and producer Diana Bentley\, a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre’s Actors Conservatory and the London Academy of Musical and Dramatic Art\, has produced the first two seasons of the Coal Mine Theatre as well as appeared in BULL\, directed by David Ferry.  Bentley recently completed filming a new Canadian television series\, Frontier\, to be broadcast on Discovery Canada and Netflix. \nThe Coal Mine Theatre\, 1454 Danforth Avenue\, Toronto\nMay 29 – June 19\, 2016\nOpening Night: Tuesday\, May 31\, 2016 @ 7:30pm\nTuesday to Sunday at 7:30pm • All Tickets $35 (preview $20)\nTo purchase tickets visit www.coalminetheatre.com/tickets/

SUMMARY:Rome Fortune at Velvet Underground
DESCRIPTION:Rome Fortune is playing Velvet Underground on May 25th with The Range. Rome just dropped his debut album on Fool’s Gold and The Range remixed one of Rome’s tracks too to celebrate the tour:https://soundcloud.com/foolsgoldrecs/rome-fortune-paid-back-loans-the-range-remix \n“Jerome Raheem Fortune” is Rome telling his story. SUMMARY:Délon at the Mod Club
DESCRIPTION:Delon is a rising pop artist who is gearing up to release his debut album. Recently\, Delon performed with Ginuwine\, for which he received a great reception from fans and music industry insiders. Delon also was a former contestant on Canadian Idol where he was the runner-up and led him to sign a contract with Sony/Ultra records. Now\, Delon is about to release his debut album\, which is filled with infectious pop songs that are poised to be global hits. Delon also teaches and is completing his PhD in social sciences at York University where he seeks to combat social injustices. Emerging from the gentrified enclaves of the suburbs in the GTA\, Délon Omrow is poised to play a revolutionary role in the music industry. Of South American and Caribbean descent\, he draws upon his robust passion for social justice and the arts in visceral and dynamic ways. Interweaving principles of philosophy with theosophy\, identity is presented not as a static element\, but as dynamic and forever-shifting. From agonizing heart-break to the hope of a just society\, each composition artistically captures the vagaries of human existence and consciousness. His first undertaking in the music industry was his inclusion as a runner up in Canadian Idol 2007. Unscathed by this\, he pursued his steadfast love for music by embarking upon a journey\, forever changing his life: song-writing. After a short time\, Délon Omrow joined forces with his cousin\, Sean Hakim\, to form the dynamic pop-trio Starchild X. It was with this group that he would have his first taste of fame. After co-writing a mere one song with his producer\, Sheldon Moore\, the group was catapulted to instant stardom when Virgin Radio 95.5 welcomed the single “Superstar” into rotation in 2012. It didn’t take long for the record labels to take heed of this: the group was courted by both Sony and Ultra Records.

SUMMARY:Ephwurd plays Hoxton
DESCRIPTION:Ephwurd have been on fire in 2015 after making their mysterious debut as a duo in May.  It wasn’t long before the masterminds behind this new project were revealed – dubstep/electro legend\, Datsik and his tour manager\, Bais Haus.  Their first release was a remix of Major Lazer’s hit\, “Lean On” and then only a few months later they released their biggest original: a collaboration with Jauz on “Rock The Party”.  “Rock The Party” has been an absolutely massive hit for Jauz and Ephwurd and has reached nearly 6 million total plays on SoundCloud and YouTube. Ephwurd’s follow up\, “Duckface” was one of autumn’s biggest hits and lead into their debut performance on the mainstage of Insomniac’s Escape: Psycho Circus Halloween festival in October. In December they made their Los Angeles debut at Exchange to a sold out audience and will be touring this summer with stops at EDC New York\, Shamblaha\, Global Dance Festival and Audio on the Bay.

DESCRIPTION:Wake Island who will be launching their new record April 29th and playing Toronto May 6th and 7th (for CMW). \nIn case you’re not totally familiar with the band\, they’re a Lebanese duo who started making music after meeting in Montreal. This second album deals with the realities of re concilin g oneself after the culture shock of immigrating\, but is also an new electronic project that utilizes its live shows to experiment with sounds in different ways\, which typically ends up in pretty fun dance parties. \nTheir sound is a blend of various influences of electronic and pop music\, touching upon themes of self discovery through immigration and adapting to new environments. The band then took their work to long time collaborator\, friend and producer Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes). With his help\, they were able to infuse rock elements in their new electronic recordings\, which created a sense of coherence with their past work. \nBuy tickets here for the Burdock https://cmw.net/music/tickets/ticket-details/?schedule_ID=51 and here for the Handlebar https://cmw.net/music/tickets/ticket-details?schedule_ID=100 \nHere are some live videos to give you an idea\nhttps://youtu.be/oAz7fYgXZ5c\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9LZVZa8CMc&index=1&list=PL3UlKndXBNkSGSRKPSB-qPw898pGUkmNc

SUMMARY:World Stage presents LOOKING FOR PAUL
DESCRIPTION:World Stage 2016 continues with the Canadian premiere of Looking for Paul: Inez van Dam vs. the Buttplug Gnome\, a big\, messy avant-garde performance that questions the role of public art. Four performances only will be presented April 27-30 at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre in this genre-colliding work.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInez van Dam lives and works in Rotterdam opposite the so-called “Buttplug Gnome\,” a controversial sculpture by contemporary American artist Paul McCarthy. Her anger and aversion for this publicly funded art circuitously leads her to the Dutch-Flemish actors’ group Wunderbaum. They invite Van Dam to travel with them to Los Angeles to help her confront McCarthy and to create a new theatre piece documenting her journey and the artistic process. The resulting work explodes — sometimes very messily — in to a debate on aesthetics\, politics and the meaning of public art in a forum that is wild\, witty and rabidly unconcerned with decorum.\n\n“Looking for Paul is a funny\, smart and engaging work that both parodies and pays homage to our relationship to art and the artist who created it . . . in this case\, infamous contemporary artist Paul McCarthy\,” explains Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen.\n\nLooking for Paul has garnered critical acclaim in the theatre world:\n\n“With boldness and humour\, Wunderbaum reminds us that the only art worth making is that which disrupts\, challenges and tests artists and audiences.” The Guardian (UK)\n“Easily the funniest and most audacious thin g I saw all year.” Out West Arts (Los Angeles)\n“It is a slick\, clever production that should not be missed.” Broadway Baby (UK)\n\nSpecial discussions will complement these Looking for Paul performances (free with ticket purchase):\n\nApril 27: Pre-show Tea on Opening Night with Denise Cruz\, one of World Stage’s Scholars-in-Residence from the University of Toronto.\nApril 28: Post-show “talkshow” invites the audience to connect with the artists who will answer questions about the performance.\n\nSince its inaugural season 30 years ago in 1986\, World Stage continues to present groundbreaking contemporary performances from around the world. The 2016 season\, curated by Artistic Director Tina Rasmussen\, includes seven international theatre\, dance and multidisciplinary performances from Belgium\, Canada\, England\, France\, Germany\, the Netherlands and Palestine.

SUMMARY:TAPESTRY OPERA presents THE DEVIL INSIDE
DESCRIPTION:“It is one of the most interesting\, well sung and well produced pieces of opera that has been seen on the Scottish stage for quite a few years.” – Opera Britannia 2016\n\nTapestry Opera presents the North American premiere of THE DEVIL INSIDE\, a new co-production by Scottish Opera and Music Theatre Wales. The latest work from Britain’s trailblazing librettist-composer team\, Louise Welsh and Stuart MacRae\, THE DEVIL INSIDE is a modern Faustian tale\, “finely paced” and “immaculately crafted” according to a 5-star review in The Guardian (UK). THE DEVIL INSIDE marks the first time Scottish Opera has been presented in North America and the first time a UK Opera company has been presented in Toronto in over a hundred years.\n\nInspired by The Bottle Imp by Robert Louis Stevenson\, THE DEVIL INSIDE is an imp in a bottle who can grant every conceivable desire. The bottle can be bought and sold\, but only at a lower price each time.  And anyone who dies while in possession of the bottle goes straight to hell . . . forever. A compelling look at human nature from love and selflessness to greed and mass consumption.\n\n“This is a brilliant new work that makes you think. It is spine tingling opera.” – Opera Britannia 2016\n\nTapestry Opera and Scottish Opera have been collaborating together since 2009 following Tapestry Opera’s international LibLab: Composer-Librettist Laboratory. THE DEVIL INSIDE is their third of four collaborations\, the first being Pub Operas in 2011\, followed by M’dea Undone\, which had its world premiere May 2015 at Evergreen Brickworks in Toronto. Tapestry will be premiering their fourth collaboration\, the co-commission Rocking Horse Winner\, this May.\n\nTHE DEVIL INSIDE is also the third collaboration between Librettist Louise Welsh and composer Stuart MacRae. Ghost Patrol (2011)\, which followed their first partnership Five: 15 Operas Made in Scotland (2009)\, was a critical success and winner of the exclusive 2013 South Bank Sky Award for Opera. Also a British crime writer\, Louise Welsh is the author of six novels including The Girl on the Stairs (2012) and A Lovely Way to Burn (2014). Scottish Composer Stuart MacRae was writing powerfully expressive works in his mid-twenties receiving commissions from such organizations as the BBC and the London Sinfonietta and being appointed as Composer-in-Association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. His 52 completed compositions include works for opera\, theatre\, orchestra\, ensembles and soloists.\n\nGhost Patrol’s director Matthew Richardson and conductor Michael Rafferty lead the cast of mezzo-soprano Rachel Kelly\, a recent graduate of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme; baritone Ben McAteer\, a 2015/16 Scottish Opera Emerging Artist; tenor Nicholas Sharratt (The Pirates of Penzance 2013\, Ghost Patrol 2012); baritone Steven Page (The Rake’s Progress 2011\, The Pirates of Penzance 2013); and players of the Scottish Opera Orchestra.\n\nTapestry Opera continues to drive the evolution of opera with an innovative 36th season\, which concludes with the world premiere of ROCKING HORSE WINNER\, another Scottish Opera co-commission\, May 27 – June 4 at Berkeley Street Theatre-Downstairs.

Rooted in pop\, awash in layers of sound\, Glory Glory is ready to make you sweat.

SUMMARY:Factory Theatre Presents A LINE IN THE SAND
DESCRIPTION:There’s a thin line between brutality and bravery. Factory presents A LINE IN THE SAND\, written by Guillermo Verdecchia\, Marcus Youssef\, directed by Nigel Shawn Williams\, and starring John Cleland\, Danny Ghantous\, and Morgan David Jones. \n\n\n“Naked is the paring down of artifice to expose the natural and beautiful content of the play.” \n– Nigel Shawn Williams\n\n\nNigel Shawn Williams directs the gripping story of an unlikely friendship between a troubled Canadian soldier and a 16-year-old Palestinian boy who meet in the scorched Qatari desert during Operation Desert Shield. Their secret and tenuous friendship comes to an abrupt end with the torture and murder of the teenager inside the Canadian base; an act to which his friend the soldier was a witness\, if not a willing participant. \n \nTwenty years ago\, A LINE IN THE SAND ripped the benevolent mask off western peacekeeping operations and challenged Canada’s long treasured mythology that it is a nation of quiet diplomats. With the current discussions to end Canadian air strikes against ISIS in Iraq\, A LINE IN THE SAND continues to challenge Canada’s participation in war and the many brutal acts committed in its name.\n \nA LINE IN THE SAND was created in 1995 for the New Play Centre (now Playwrights Centre in Vancouver)\, and was revised and produced at Tarragon Theatre a year later. The production was also staged at Harbourfront Centre’s World Stage Festival in Toronto in 1996\, directed by Verdecchia. It won the Chalmers Best New Play Award in 1997\, and three MECCA Awards (Montréal English Critics Circle Awards) in 2009. \n \nGuillermo Verdecchia is a director\, playwright\, dramaturge\, and reluctant actor. He is the recipient of the Governor-General’s Award for Drama for his play Fonteras Americanas and a four-time winner of the Chalmers Canadian Play Award. His work\, which includes the Governor General shortlisted Noam Chomsky Lectures (with Daniel Brooks)\, the Adventures of Ali & Ali (with Marcus Youssef and Camyar Chai)\, and Another Country has been anthologized\, translated into Spanish and Italian\, and produced in Europe and the US. He is a Resident Artist with Soulpepper Theatre where he heads New Play Development. \n \nA LINE IN THE SAND\, the Chalmers Award-winning play\, was Marcus Youssef’s first full-length work\, and the first of three collaborations with Guillermo Verdecchia. His other plays include Winners and Losers\, Leftovers\, Jabber\, How Has My Love Affected You?\, Ali and Ali and the aXes of Evil\, Adrift\, and Peter Panties. These have been performed at major festivals and theatres across North America\, Australia and Europe and have been translated into multiple languages and published by Talonbooks and Playwrights Canada Press. Marcus co-founded the East Van artist-run production centre Progress Lab 1422 and is artistic director of Vancouver’s Neworld Theatre.\n \nA LINE IN THE SAND features performances by Dora Award-Winner John Cleland as Colonel (Late Company/Theatre Centre\, This is War/Prairie Theatre Exchange\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream/Canadian Stage); Ryerson Theatre School student  Danny Ghantous as Sadiq (You Can’t Take it With You\, Adult Entertainment\, Filthy Rich//Ryerson Theatre); and Australian-born Toronto- based Morgan David Jones as Mercer (A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Cate Blanchett/Sydney Theatre Company\, Romeo and J uliet/Citadel Theatre).\n \nStripped down to the most fundamental and striking elements\, the Naked Season pares down theatre to a series of pure encounters between the audience\, the actors\, and the text. A LINE IN THE SAND is presented as part of a seasonette that also includes: SALT-WATER MOON\, written by David French\, and directed by Ravi Jain\, February 23 – March 13 in the Mainspace Theatre; and THE CRACKWALKER\, written and directed by Judith Thompson\, March 22 – April 10 in the Mainspace Theatre.
