Vintage galore

For just a few more days (until Sunday the 31st), vintage-shopping enthusiasts can head over to the Junction’s Russet & Empire to catch a glimpse of Shoebox Vintage owners’ Pam and Natalie’s summer collection (and maybe walk home with a few one-of-a-kind treasures). The host store is similar to The Drake Hotel General Store in that it stocks a variety of Canadiana items and antique novelties. You know, the ones you find yourself spending exorbitant amounts of money on just to be able to say you own it? (I was the victim of an unbearably lovely Polaroid Camera’s clever positioning on a top shelf. I just had to. It was begging me to gift it to a friend, so I did).

But when a launch party features gratis PBRs and homemade shortbread cookies, what’s a few dollars thrown down on something so precious?

R&E’s summer social last Friday launched the Shoebox pop-up. Store proprietor Micah and her Shoebox banditos had guests tickled pink, featuring a myriad of treats in the aforementioned colour scheme and kitten-themed party blowers.  Yes. Kitten-themed party blowers. I ask you, does it get any better?

I’ll save you a guess: it does. What sets this arrangement apart from its contemporaries—like Topshop’s recent Queen West stint—is the unbounded warmth of its hostesses. These ladies are modern-day factory girls, honest young professionals with irresistible charm. Another Friday flashback: adorned in vintage pieces from their own closets, Micah, Pam and Natalie bustled happily through the Summer Social crowd, assuring that everyone remained well-fed and smiling.

I beamed all the way home, toting a new pair of high-waisted denim shorts ($20) and a pair of high-waisted Calvin Klein jeans ($25) for myself, and a working Polaroid for a friend ($45).

You can check out more photos from the Launch Party on Makes me Smile blog. First, however, I suggest you don your kicks and run, don’t walk, over to 390 Keele Street before it’s gone in the blink of an eye.
